The Charlotte Grange #398 surprised Wendy Pierce with its Community Citizen Award at the June 7 meeting. The award is presented annually in recognition of outstanding service to the community and mankind.
Wendy said, “I was shocked! I knew nothing about this!” She had been invited to the meeting, she thought, to talk about the blood drives at the Senior Center. The Grange helps with the drives by providing the snacks. “I was so honored,” added Wendy. “The Grange does so much - whenever there is a need they are always there to help. They are my inspiration to do more.”
Wendy was recognized for her many contributions to the community, including as the volunteer American Red Cross Blood Drive Coordinator for Charlotte’s six annual blood drives. According to David Carmichael, account executive for the American Red Cross Blood Service for the northern New England Region, Wendy has enabled “the Red Cross’ collection of over 200 pints of blood per year at the Charlotte Senior Center. In fact, 2010 marks the fifth straight year that Wendy has undertaken such an incredible responsibility. Over the course of her term, a total of 1,357 life saving units of blood have been collected – to date!”
In his letter of congratulations that was presented to Wendy along with the award, Carmichael says, “You could not have chosen a more worthy candidate upon whom to bestow such an honor. She is an incredibly humble, yet dedicated community servant who just also happens to possess an infectious smile!”
Wendy contributes her time and energy in many other ways. She has volunteered for Meals on Wheels for eight years, and serves as the secretary for the Friends of the Charlotte Senior Center. In that capacity she helped coordinate the annual fundraising letter that was sent to all Charlotters this month. She encourages everyone to respond, as the funds raised help support the programs and classes at the Senior Center. She also organized the recent plant sale for the Senior Center, which she says was very successful.
Wendy describes herself as a “temporarily retired” adult and geriatric nurse practitioner. She and her husband, Howard, and daughter, Haleigh, moved to Charlotte from Ferrisburgh seven years ago, attracted by the good school. Haleigh graduated from CCS this week. The Pierces live on Lime Kiln Road.
