Selectboard member John Owen has arranged meetings for residents with representatives of the Shelburne and Vermont State police to discuss the recent crime spree. The meetings cover recommended security measures including Neighborhood Watch. The next one is this Thursday, December 16, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel parish hall in East Charlotte. The final meeting is Thursday, December 23, at the Charlotte Town Hall. Both are at 7 p.m.
Investigations continue, with strong leads in the recent cases. However, everyone is cautioned to lock doors, keep valuables out of sight and take note (description and license plate number if possible) of any unusual activity or unfamiliar vehicles in your neighborhood.
The police have indicated that they believe many of the thefts are motivated by drug use, and items stolen tend to be “flipped” quickly. Jewelry, for example, may be sold to a coin or jewelry shop, and within a day or two resold out of state to be melted down for the gold.
Call 911 if a break-in occurs or emergency help is needed. Call the Williston barracks of the State Police at 878-7111 with other information that might be helpful.
