Charlotte Central School’s Arbor Day celebration this year took place on Friday, May 13, under a beautiful, sunny sky. Two trees provided by Horsford Gardens & Nursery were planted, which, after 19 years, brings the total number to 38. This practice was started by Charlie Proutt (shown posing tree questions to the students) and continued this year. The student planting and maintenance crews are selected by answering correctly Charlie’s quizzes. All previous trees were fertilized and mulched by these doughty workers, under the supervision of several teachers. Charlie deserves a hearty vote of thanks from the community for his many years of promoting Arbor Day in this fashion. He provides trees, mulch, fertilizer and tools.
The two trees planted this year were dedicated to the memory of former student Nicholas Hall, who was touchingly eulogized by his sister, Marcy Lischke. In addition, his mother and stepfather, Marcy and Wade Weathers, presented a check for $300 to the Tree Warden for the Rutter Tree Fund roadside planting. Living memorials seem like such a grand idea.
Co-Principal Audry Boutaugh conducted the proceedings, which included a fine “Tree Facts” presentation by the CCS “Architects” with their challenge cards: DID YOU KNOW? It also included a short act by the Tree Warden on “Trees and Water,” using props as symbols. Deputy Tree Warden Mark Dillenbeck was in charge of the planting of the two trees in the row along Hinesburg Road.
It is not too late for readers to do their own tree planting, even though most buds have broken and leaves emerged, if they obtain trees that have soil attached, i.e. in pot containers or balled in burlap. Purchase these from a reputable nursery. A helpful tips-in-purchasing-sheet, prepared by the Vermont Urban and Community Program is available from the Tree Warden, and there is also a small supply in Town Hall.
