For Dillon Machavern it’s a summer of brakes and ground balls.
Charlotte’s Dillon Machavern has been driving and hitting – cars and baseballs, that is. Last November he successfully completed the Skip Barber Advanced Driving School, which allows him to compete in the MAZDASpeed Challenge in an X-5 Miata. To date, he has driven in six MAZDASpeed Challenge races; at Sebring in December and February and at Lime Rock, Connecticut (Barber’s home track), June 10 and 11. His best finish was a second place at Lime Rock. If that isn’t enough, he has also continued racing Shifter Carts. On June 26 he qualified first in his class and finished first overall. He is currently tied for the points lead. His mother, Patrice, just tells him to make sure he wears his helmet.

S.D. Ireland American Legion Baseball Team stands up to the competition this summer.
S.D. Ireland is the American Legion Baseball Team for Charlotte players ages 16-19. Lawrence Halvorson, CVU outfielder and designated hitter from Charlotte, has been one of the team’s consistent batters. Against a tough Colchester squad in late June, Halvorson blasted two home runs to make the difference in a 10-9 win that almost slipped away in the seventh inning. Last Thursday, Halvorson and his mates traveled to Saratoga Springs, New York, to compete in the Cooper’s Cave Tournament, a five-game series that saw Ireland capture three victories over teams from New York and Rhode Island. Beating Rhode Island’s Haxie Post #74 by a 12 to 5 margin, Halvorson led all hitters with two doubles and a single. Teammate Evan Healey went 3 for 5 while gaining 3 RBIs in the process. Ireland’s overall record is 11 wins, 7 losses, while standing 5 and 3 in Northern Vermont Divisional play.

High School All-Star teams feature a number of Redhawks.
Placing four players on the first-team All-State squad, CVU men’s lacrosse, Vermont Division I state champions, led the honor roll this spring. Charlotte attack man Lawrence Dee along with mid-fielder Jake Marston made the list as did defender Ben Teasdale and senior goalie Eric Palmer. Nate Wells, another attack from Charlotte, was named to the second team. On the women’s ledger, Redhawk midfielder Amanda Kinneston was first team while Charlotte’s Kate Raszka was a second-team all-star. Brenna Gorman, another local player, received honorable mention.
CVU’s baseball team placed pitcher Davis Mikell and infielders Tucker Kolasch and Andrew Nick on the first-team Metro Division squad with Charlotte first baseman Ryan Machavern on the second team. Jeff Badger and Ian Solomon received honorable mention.

Free Press Players of the Year wear Redhawk wings.
CVU senior Amanda Kinneston added to her trophy collection by being named “Woman Soccer Player of the Year” by The Burlington Free Press. She was joined in the yearly awards by hockey players Sophie Steinhoff and Robbie Dobrowski.

CVU Coach Enman captures U.S. Mountain Running Championships.
Cassie Enman, coach of the Redhawk track and field team, won the U.S. Mountain Running Championships, climbing New Hampshire’s Cranmore Mountain in 32 minutes and 59 seconds for the 7.6 kilometer course. In doing so, she earned a spot on the U.S. team, which will compete in the World Championships in Albania in September. In April Cassie placed 23rd in the Boston Marathon, being the first Vermonter to cross the finish line.

Another Tomasi finishes his soccer career as an All-Star.
The Burlington Free Press featured recent CVU graduate Tino Tomasi from Williston who played his final soccer game as a Redhawk representative against a team of New Hampshire All-Stars in the 37th annual Lions Cup Twin State game at Castleton State College Saturday. The article notes that over the course of his high school career, Tino has played every position except goal tender for the Redhawks. He and his four brothers and sisters, five of 27 adopted by retired social worker Theresa Tomasi over a number of years, first kicked a makeshift soccer ball around the streets of Accra in their native Ghana. Tino and his younger brother Tanner plan to go head-to-head again in the fall as opposing members of two prep school teams.
