Machavern hits Road Atlanta with his engine running.
Dillon Machavern headed to Georgia in mid-July to participate in his first set of Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) races at Road Atlanta. Driving a #10 Panic Motorsports Spec Miata, he navigated the 2.54-mile course with its 12 turns and its rolling hills, continuing to better his lap time with each race. On the second day of racing he shaved additional times off his lap record and reached top speeds of 110 to 114 mph heading into the end run.
Konnor Fleming achieves football recognition despite injury.
Konnor Fleming, CVU football star from Charlotte, tore an anterior cruciate ligament in the semifinal game of the fall tournament against Rice. Fearful that his college athletic activities may be curtailed as a result, he worked hard and returned to lacrosse practice several months after surgery. He was able to play in the latter half of his senior season, helping the Redhawks to the state championship. Recently, Konnor was invited to play in the 2011 Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl against New Hampshire football’s best. A National Football Federation Hall of Fame 2011 inductee, he will attend Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, next fall and, hopefully, continue his career on the gridiron. He also has excelled in the classroom, earning membership in the National Honor Society and graduating from CVU as a magna cum laude Latin Scholar. In his spare time he worked with Connecting Youth (CY) and talked about a “Funny Thing that Happened to Him on the Way to the Forum.”
Twin-State soccer teams contain familiar names.
Castleton State College was the site of the men’s and women’s twin-state soccer games against opponents from across the Connecticut River. CVU’s Lindsay Hawley and Emma Eddy played pivotal roles in the girls’ 2-0 win. On the boys’ side, New Hampshire scored in the 87th minute for a 2-1 victory, its first since 2005. Redhawk Tino Tomasi was awarded the sportsmanship trophy.
Beldock is one of nine newcomers to Marist College lacrosse.
Charlotte’s Geordie Beldock is one of nine new players joining the Marist College men’s lacrosse team. A graduate of the Berkshire School, Geordie will play attack and midfield. He scored 80 goals with 51 assists in his high school career and was named to the first team All-Western New England squad. As a freshman he led his team in goals per game, as Berkshire finished second in the state that year.
Halvorson leads SD Ireland to the state American Legion baseball tournament.
SD Ireland, the American Legion baseball team for southern Chittenden County, had a familiar name appear numerous times as one of its leading batsmen, Charlotte’s Lawrence Halvorson. SDI came on strong as the regular season ended, finishing with a win over OEC and an overall record of 16 wins, 8 losses (10-4 in its conference). Larry was 2 for 4 in that game with a run of his own and an RBI. In the opening round of the state tournament in Rutland he led his team to victory with a three-hit performance that included an RBI double and a triple. Ireland went 2 and 0 in the tournament behind Halvorson’s three hits in a 15-5 shellacking of Essex before losing its first game to Colchester in a close 5-3 effort. Bennington finally eliminated SDI, shutting them out 4-0. Larry ended the summer as one of only three teammates – he, Drew Nick and Tucker Kolasch – to collect a hit in the game.
