Charlotte Little Leaguers stand at 3-2 in the state tournament.
Called “intrepid” by coach Tom Powell, Charlotte’s Little League all-star baseball team has been heading to Burlington’s Schifilliti Field for the state tournament this past week. Taking two out of three of their first games, they split games 4 and 5, using some strong pitching and power hitting to top Richmond 4-2 on Wednesday before falling to Colchester 2-1 Saturday morning. Hayden Kjelleran and Jack Duggan both homered against Richmond, while pitchers Aiden Powell and Andrew Bortnick used overpowering speed coupled with change-of-pace to keep the opposing hitters off balance. On at least two occasions, Drew Colgan lulled runners to sleep before throwing them out at first base with his strong arm and pinpoint accuracy.

Charlotte race driver Rich Lowrey opened the month at Thunder Road International Speed Bowl by being nudged from a victory in the 50-lap Late Model class, as Matt White of Northfield held him off at the finish line.
American Legion baseball team spends its evenings in New York.
S.D. Ireland Legion baseball team has been competing in the ominously labeled “Cooper’s Cave Tournament” in Saratoga – half expecting James Fenimore himself to emerge from the corn as though it were the “Field of Dreams.” After losing on Wednesday to a squad from Kingston, New York, the Irish came back and split a doubleheader on Friday against teams from Maine and Rhode Island. Charlotte’s Lawrence Halvorson was part of a powerful Ireland offense that knocked off the Mainiacs 9-2. Larry contributed an RBI triple. They fell to Hoxie Cleaners from Rhode Island in the nightcap 8-6.
CVU Lacrosse wins recognition from coaches.
The state lacrosse coaches’ all-state men’s team was named recently, with several players from CVU showing up. Nick Hart at midfield and Cully Millikin at defense were named to the Division I first team. Taylor Gingras and Charlotte’s Lawrence Dee on attack along with goal tender Eric Palmer made the second team. Hart was also named one of six All-Americans from Vermont, and his defender Millikin was among the VLCA’s Green and Gold Outstanding Players for the Year. His peers selected Head Coach Dave Trevithick as the Coach of the Year.
