Machavern hits and pitches for Ireland.
No, it isn’t the international baseball season. It’s strictly American Legion time. S.D. Ireland sponsors the local team, and Charlotte’s Ryan Machavern is one of its starting pitchers and leading hitters. While the team has struggled through the early part of the summer, Ryan has consistently delivered RBIs. He collected two hits leading to runs and scored twice himself in a recent 12-inning loss to South Burlington.
Halvorson gains Metro Division honors.
Lawrence Halvorson was named as an outfielder to the second team of the Metro Division baseball all-stars. His CVU teammate, sophomore Andrew Nick, made first team as part of the infield, while Tucker Kolasch and Collin Teator received Honorable Mention.
Three CVU softball players were recognized for their play by the Metro Division coaches. Graduating infielder Heather McLaughlin made the second team, and Emily Himberg and underclassman Cayla McCarthy received honorable mention.
Pfaff wins heptathlon.
Recent Charlotte resident Brittany Pfaff was the overall women’s winner in the 35th state heptathlon championships held at Green Mountain Union High School June 21 and 22. CVU athlete Summer Spillane finished 15th; the Redhawks came in 7th in the team standings. Pfaff secured her top spot by winning the 200-meter run and the shot put, placing second at 800 meters, third in the 100-meter hurdles and third in the high jump. It was a busy weekend for her.
The CVU men placed third as a team with Anthony Jordick 8th among individuals and Alex Bonfigli 15th. Tyler Barnes was ranked 17th at the end of the first day’s events.
Twin States and North/South games spotlight high school stars from Vermont and New Hampshire.
Vermont women’s hockey team turned out to be the only winner in this summer’s Twin-State competition. Stowe’s Melissa Bizzari’s two goals led to a 4-2 win over the Granite State stars.
In track and field, New Hampshire captured an overall 97-69 victory, with Brittany Pfaff leading the Vermont individuals through her second place in the shot put.
At Dartmouth, CVU’s Erika Gobeille for the women and Nick Hart for the men were among Vermont’s offensive standouts in Twin-State lacrosse. Hart scored two goals in an 18-7 loss, and Gobeille hit Vermont’s final goal as the women dropped the game 22-5. Hart will attend St. Lawrence University in the fall and hopes to walk on in lacrosse. Hinesburg resident and Redhawk defender Cully Millikin also played for the Green Mountain team.
North and South split a doubleheader in their all-star baseball game. The north stars won the opener 5-4, thanks in large measure to a diving defensive play by CVU’s Alec Zulo late in the game to save a run. The down-state stars captured the nightcap 9-4.
