Stay Safe And Stay Off The Ice!
And Charlotte Fire & Rescue Emergency Responses in February
by Kay Gault,
March 24, 2011, page 5.....

A reminder: please use extreme caution near the water and ice! As spring approaches, Lake Champlain and our local ponds and streams are in a cycle of melting and refreezing, making the ice weaker and more dangerous. If you go out on the ice, be sure to take a friend and keep some distance between you; if one goes through the ice, the other can call for help. If someone does fall through the ice, call 911 right away. Leave the rescue work to us and don’t become another victim. We do respond to all calls for an ice rescue or water rescue emergency, including for your pets.

This time of year also brings the possibility of flooding, as the ice and snow melt. Please remember not to drive or walk into floodwater, especially where a current exists, even if the water appears to be shallow. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of water. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood danger.

For more information about ice and water safety, please call the Charlotte Volunteer Fire & Rescue Station at 425-3111.
