As the Little League baseball season nears, how about a “Yogiism” to start things off?
“Little League baseball is a very good thing, because it keeps parents off the streets.”
- Yogi Berra

Wrestling picks up at elementary and middle school levels.

Wrestling has become a fast-growing sport in Chittenden South. The youth team, grades kindergarten through sixth, traveled to Mount Mansfield Union High School and Vergennes recently, bringing home a sportsmanship trophy from the MMU meet. With wrestlers from Hinesburg, Williston and Shelburne as well as Charlotte, the Chittenden South team represents the region. Damien Broc, a first grader, took second place at MMU and first at Vergennes. Scott Mathieu, a second grader, brought home a third-place medal from Mount Mansfield and topped the field at Vergennes. Maverick Lowrey won fourth place at Vergennes.

Middle schoolers also had a busy season this winter. Seventh graders Caleb Wright (8 wins, 9 losses) and Zack Gregory (2 wins, 10 losses) along with Shawn Lussier (8 wins, 12 losses and a third place in the state finals) represented Charlotte well. CSSU finished third in this year’s Middlebury tournament, which was its highest ranking in the team’s brief history. Things bode well for the future.

CVU’s Lacaillade earns Most Valuable Player.

Although the Austin Conference women’s hockey all-stars lost to a BFA-laden Harris Conference team 3-0 in the annual Rotary Classic, CVU’s Amanda Lacaillade earned Most Valuable Player honors for her Austin squad. She was joined by Redhawk forwards Molly Howard and Amanda Armell and defender Alyx Rivard on the all-star roster.

CVU dominates the men’s hockey classic roster.

Five players from the Division I state champion Redhawks will skate for the Austin Conference in the Rotary Hockey Classic to be played March 26 in Essex. Leading scorer Robbie Dobrowski is joined by forwards Derek Goodwin, Kyle Logan and JP Benoit along with defenseman Erick MacLean.

Marston leads Middlebury Nordic men into the NCAA ski tournament.

Stowe hosted the 58th annual National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Alpine and Nordic ski tournament with 21 teams from colleges and universities across the country. When all unraveled, the University of Colorado finished first with Dartmouth third, UVM sixth and Middlebury ninth. Middlebury senior and Charlotte native Chase Marston was the top finisher from his school at 16th place in the 20-kilometer classic race. He had previously led Middlebury freestyle skiers, taking 31st in the 10K.

Fahle wins Athlete of the Week honors.

CVU Nordic skier and winner of both freestyle and classic races in the state championships, Hans Fredrik Fahle was named male Athlete of the Week by the Burlington Free Press. His victories helped CVU secure the team championship. Hans is an exchange student from Norway who skis on the Lillomark club team in his homeland. Redhawk coach Sarah Strack was quoted as saying that he “adjusted well to the American culture and steadily progressed throughout the season.”

Synergy Football team wins 8 vs.8.

The Synergy Football Club team competed in the New England Football Club U12 tournament in Massachusetts on March 19 and 20.  The team, including Charlotte residents Teddy Turnau, Antonio Pugliese, Oliver Bijur and Jerry Berkowitz, were the champions in the 8 vs. 8 division. The team’s next tournament will be in Plattsburgh on April 9.

All ages dribble at Charlotte Central Hoop Fest.

Teams ranging in age from 4th graders through seniors (18-52 years old) came to CCS for the annual Hoop Fest Saturday and Sunday, March 12 and 13. Most of the teams were from Charlotte, but others braved the cold weather and snow to travel here from as far as Colchester and Rutland. The round-robin tournament saw 15-minute games played at half court on either end of the CCS gym. Enthusiasm reigned.
