Rice Laxmen taken down by Burr and Burton for the State Title

The top seeded Green Knight men’s lacrosse team ran into a determined crew from Burr and Burton Academy in the Division II finals of the state tournament. Scoreless through much of the first half, Rice rallied in the second to draw within two goals of the Bulldogs in the final quarter. However, the visitors from down state closed the door on the Knights, pulling out a 7-4 victory. Although he did not score in the final, Charlotte’s Will Hiser was a consistent goal producer throughout the season, helping Rice attain its 15-3 win/loss record. He helped Rice into the finals, scoring one of the Green Knight’s 16 goals in their lop-sided semi-final win over Hartford. Before facing Burr and Burton, the Knights were undefeated against divisional opponents.

Pilla one of the top runners up Mount Washington
Charlotte runner Jack Pilla again finished near the top of his age group in the recent grueling Mount Washington Road Race in New Hampshire. Tracking the course through Pinkham Notch, his time of just over one and one-quarter hours placed him fourth in his division and 63rd overall.

S.D. Ireland goes winless in the Wood Wars
S.D. Ireland, the local American Legion baseball team, faced two days of stiff competition from both in state and out, in last weekend’s Wood Bat Wars Legion tournament. Despite playing host in all three games, Ireland dropped close decisions to the team from West Milford, New Jersey, 3-1 and to South Burlington’s Knights of Columbus, 6-5. They were held to two hits and eliminated from the tournament by Albany, New York, in the visitors’ 5-1 win. None of Vermont’s four representatives managed to land in the championship game, although Colchester and South Burlington played for consolation honors. Ireland rallied its forces on Sunday behind Paul Handy’s one-hit pitching to blank Clinton County 6-0.
Update on the Vermont City Marathon
We heard from Marilyn Holmberg that her two daughters, Meredith and Kathryn ran half-marathons on different teams so that they could run the second half of the race together. We also received a phone call notifying us that Nick Simon and Jeff Wallis formed a two-man relay team calling itself “Half the Fun.” They finished nine minutes shy of four hours.

Two Charlotte girls score big in New Jersey soccer tournament.
Two of Charlotte’s 7th grade girls helped Vermont’s Olympic Development soccer team win two out of three games at the Rider’s Cup Regional Tournament in Princeton, New Jersey. With Lily Harris as goalie and Kate Raszka as sweeper, the ‘95 girls team placed better than any Vermont team ever has in this elite tournament. Other Charlotters in older age divisions participating in this year’s Region I ODP tournament included Sienna Searles, Phoebe Judge, and Chris Sulva.

Granite State lacrosse teams win Twin-States’ rivalry
Despite a goal by CVU’s Brad Goldberg, the all-star lacrosse men from New Hampshire downed Vermont’s squad 14-9 in a game played at Hanover, New Hampshire high school last weekend. Coming out of the gate quickly, the Green Mountain boys led by four goals at halftime. However, New Hampshire’s depth of talent showed in the second half as the home-staters held Vermont scoreless for the final two quarters. The Vermont women waited until the second half to strike hard, netting three goals quickly to cut the New Hampshire lead to just two. However, using a well-conceived timeout, the Granite State coach settled the team, and New Hampshire went on to score six of the game’s next seven goals in a show of offensive strength that resulted in 42 goals between both squads and a 26-16 New Hampshire win.
