Charlotters play volleyball for Vermont Commons School.
Two Charlotte students played on Vermont Common School’s (VCS) volleyball teams this season. Leynah McGarghan helped the VCS A team gain a state championship for the third year running, and Chloe Hotaling played on the VCS B team. The A spikers defeated Enosburg Falls High School in a close 3-game final match for the title and received the team sportsmanship award for the tournament. Isle La Motte’s Leslie Gadway was recognized as the “Most Outstanding Player” among the women.
Emilie Olsen captains New York University cross-country team.
Emily Olsen, CVU graduate and senior from Charlotte, is the captain of this year’s NYU cross-country running team. According to Ted Ryan’s article in the November 10 Shelburne News, her team placed fourth in the University Athletic Association (UAA) meet. She came in 55th overall among individuals. NYU recently competed in the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships held November 13 at Oneonta, New York. Emily placed 94th out of 236 runners to help her team gain a third place behind St. Lawrence and SUNY Geneseo and earn it an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III national championships to be held November 20 in Wartburg, Iowa.
Hannah Meier wins cross-country honors at Middlebury.
Charlotte’s Hannah Meier was named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) second-team for cross-country runners. Both men’s and women’s Panthers teams swept the conference championships.
Elizabeth Beldock honored for her lacrosse leadership.
The Vermont chapter of U.S. Lacrosse honored Elizabeth Beldock, Assistant Coach of CVU’s women’s lacrosse team and longtime contributor to the sport in this area, on November 7. Elizabeth founded the CCS lacrosse program, coaching boys and girls from 1998 until 2003. She co-directed the Charlotte Lacrosse League in 2007-2008 while coaching Under-13 and Under-15 girls’ teams. She took the U.S. Lacrosse U-15 team to the National Youth Lacrosse Festival in 2009 and founded the U-18 Girls Travel Lacrosse Team, the “Field House Selects,” a group that she continues to head. Elizabeth played college lacrosse at Hollins University in 1982-1983 and was a tri-captain her senior year.
Chittenden South Looks for Wrestlers.
CSSU is looking for 7th and 8th graders interested in learning the ropes of wrestling. Signups are scheduled for today (November 18) at the Hinesburg Community School cafeteria. The cost of $65 includes a uniform. The program is embarking on its 12th season, and it serves as a feeder for the CVU High School team. Over the 12 years, CSSU has produced 22 state champions and 26 runners up. Coaches teach folk-style wrestling techniques, including balance, strength and teamwork. Practices are held Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays with matches on Saturdays. Wrestlers are paired by weight and earn between three and five individual matches per tournament.
CVU grad Macnee leads Panthers through NCAAs.
Middlebury College soccer player Tyler Macnee, a CVU graduate, scored in the final minute to give the Panthers a 2-1 win over William Patterson College in the NCAA Level III regional final November 14. The win moves Middlebury to the sectional round against Babson College next Saturday. Macnee and another CVU grad, Carson Cornbrooks, were named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) second team all-stars.
Swarthmore College soccer player, junior Micah Rose, a Redhawk alum from Williston was named to the All-Centennial Conference first team as well as earning a place on the conference’s academic honor roll for the second year. He was captain of the team.
Brittany Pfaff makes the All-Conference Rookie Team.
Sienna freshman who grew up in Charlotte and played for Rice Memorial, Brittany Pfaff, led the 2010 Sienna College women’s soccer team with nine goals. She ranked second in total points with 22.
