Just a reminder about SNOW DAYS! If there is ever a question whether the Senior Center is closed due to weather, know that we will follow the Charlotte Central School closing, which is posted on local TV and radio stations as well as cssu.org.
The center will be open for regular activities on Monday, January 17, but the Monday Munch crews will observe the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. We look forward to seeing you all for Monday lunch again on the 24th.
Challenge your brain! With an eye toward speaking and understanding the language better, the French Conversation Group comes together Wednesday mornings from 10:30-11:30 a.m. to “chat” about the week’s activities or interests with a goal of improving their fluency through listening and speaking. This is a fun, no-pressure way to meet some new folks, sharpen your mind and practice your French. Registration required. No fee.
This is not your granddaughter’s Pilates class! Join Phyllis Bartling Thursday mornings from 8:30-9:30 a.m. for a Mat Pilates class designed for folks 55 years and older to be challenging yet with safety in mind. Pilates specifically targets the core muscle groups, including the lower abdominals, lower back and gluteals, to improve balance, strength and posture. Exercises will be done on the floor on mats (a rolled up towel to put under your head is a good idea). Phyllis has been a certified Pilates instructor for four years, specifically teaching senior programs for three of those years. Registration required. Fee: $42.
Add some spice to your life! Learn the Art of Indian Cooking with Gopi Advani Friday afternoons from 1-3 p.m. Dates: 1/7, 1/14, 1/21 and 1/28. The lessons will start with simple staple foods and gradually progress to fancier items. Each day will have typical menu items that you can learn with lots of hands-on experience. You will have the opportunity to modify the recipes to your desire and also test the foods. If you have any favorites that you would like to learn, Gopi will take special requests during the first session, and she will try to incorporate them into subsequent classes. Registration necessary. Maximum 10. Fee: $20 per lesson includes all materials.
We continue our Movies in the Afternoon series every other Thursday afternoon from 1-3:30 p.m. with Arsenic and Old Lace on January 20, 12 Angry Men on February 3 and All About Eve on February 17. We will provide the movie and popcorn at no charge; beverages and candy can be purchased. No registration necessary.
A Grand and Loving Connection. What better way for us to entertain ourselves this coming February than an art show for a special group of artists in our community: grandparents and their “grandfriends” (or grandchildren, as we used to say)? The object is to encourage us senior folks to interact artistically with younger generation members who have special places in our hearts. Or have you already captured one of them artistically? Maybe you want to show off their artwork? Or how about doing art with your mentee from school or the neighborhood? Do remember that February 14 is Valentine’s Day, but artistic intergenerational relationships is the overriding theme. Let’s see your creative talents come alive as you work together or separately on a project. Registration forms are available in the front foyer with a deadline of January 21.
Events Following the Wednesday Luncheon at approximately 1 p.m.:
1/26: Preserving Family Recipes with Joan Weed
Wishing Aunt Lydia had written down her penuche fudge recipe? Wondering what the secret ingredient was in grandma’s tomato sauce? We’ll learn how to capture those recipes from relatives or your very own, using a simple computer program to produce an heirloom cookery book to share with family. The book will have room for stories and your own photos as well. Join us to see how much fun this can be. Your family will thank you!!
2/2: Preserving Family Recipes with Joan Weed, continued.
