Early Summer Activities
Please look for the new program of activities as an insert in this issue of The Charlotte News where we hope you will find a summer full of fun! A few early highlights are listed below:
Our Annual Plant Sale will be held on Saturday, May 21, where you will find buds, blossoms and bargains. Seedling or plant donations will be accepted at the center this Friday, May 20. Hope to see you there!
The June Art Exhibit will be the works of Ruth G. Mould (1894-1979), Vermont portrait and general artist, including portraits of several Charlotte people. Ruth studied at The Institute of Art, St. Paul, Minnesota, and The Art Students League, New York, and she represented Vermont at the 1937 World’s Fair. Other paintings and small craft works will be included in this exhibit.
Get Your Bike Ready for Summer with Sojourn Bicycling and Active Vacations, Wednesday, June 1, at 9 a.m. Kick off the season by getting your bike ready to roll during a spring tune-up session. Learn how to clean and lube your chain, inflate your tires properly and adjust your shifters. A few simple tricks will make your cycling more enjoyable. Sojourn will provide the necessary supplies, and you bring an eager attitude and your bicycle. Space is limited to 20 people and their bikes! Registration required. No fee.
Do I Need a Hero? Or Do I Already Have One? Join Margaret Aske on Friday mornings from 9-10:30 a.m. to explore the hero’s journey together. Dates: June 3, 10, 17 and 24. What is a hero/heroine? If we have a hero, who or what is the adversary? Perhaps the enemy is an idea or illness. What can the hero/heroines, real and fictional, teach us? How do their journeys relate to ours? How do we deal with what we fear? Some background material will be provided, but you will be encouraged to share your thoughts on the subject. This course will explore these questions with the hope of having a healthy exchange of ideas and some lively discussions! Margaret taught Literature and Humanities for many years at San Diego City colleges and California State University. Registration required. Fee: $40.
A Kayak Paddlers Gathering will take place on Monday, June 6, beginning at 12:15 p.m. New and ‘old’ (not literally!) paddlers are invited to gather together during Monday Munch on June 6. Join us in creating the future direction of organized kayak trips this summer. Judy Rowe, founder of our Senior Center Kayak trips in 2002, will facilitate the discussion.  Times have changed, and we will be looking at different approaches to leadership and participation. Please e-mail Kate Mesaros at rkmesaros@hotmail.com to reserve your place at the table. If you are not able to join us, please call the Senior Center to register your interest, and we will be sure to contact you. Suggested donation: $4 for lunch.
Events following the Wednesday luncheon at approximately 1 p.m.:
6/1: Charlotte People, Etc. with Mary Lighthall
Mary will be on hand to discuss the historical aspect of the June art show of the works of Ruth G. Mould.
6/8: English Country Dance with Judy Chaves
Come learn to English Country dance! Judy will have you up on your feet and learning to speak the “lingo” in no time. The only prerequisites are a knowledge of right from left (though occasional lapses are quickly forgiven!) and a willingness to move to some of the most glorious music around.
