May Artist - Shirley Crane Galliher and Friends
This show is a celebration of friends and family, a collection of artists from varied backgrounds and diverse ages, from beginners to accomplished professionals in myriad joyous expressions of the creative spirit.
There is still room in our new session of Pilates with Phyllis Bartling which began on 4/28. Feel free to come try this form of exercise to see if it right for you on Thursday mornings from 8:30 – 9:30. Session II: 4/28, 5/5, 5/12, 5/19, 5/26, 6/2. This is not your granddaughter’s Pilates class! This mat Pilates class has been designed for folks 55 years and older to be challenging yet with safety in mind. Pilates specifically targets the core muscle groups, including the lower abdominals, lower back and gluteals, to improve balance, strength and posture. Exercises will be done on the floor on mats (a rolled up towel to put under your head is a good idea). Phyllis has been a certified Pilates instructor for three years, specifically teaching Senior programs for two of those years. Registration required. Fee: $42.
The last Spring Road Hike with Marty Morrissey is Tuesday, May 10, to Underhill State Park. Depart: 8:30 a.m. We’ll start our hike at the outer parking area before the gate to the park, which is off the Pleasant Valley Road in Underhill. The hike follows the gravel road to the junction of the old CCC road approximately one mile up. We follow the old road across the base of Mt. Mansfield past the junction of the Dew Drop trail to the Maple Ridge trail, another mile. Elevation gain is about 900 feet. We will return to the park road on an old logging road. Hiking distance is four miles. Travel time is one hour each way. Please meet at the center 10 minutes prior to departure with water, good hiking or walking shoes and a snack or lunch. Registration required. No fee.
A new session of Living Strong in Vermont with Margery Rutherford and Dorrice Hammer begins on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. – noon. Dates: 5/13 thru 7/29, two days /week. This program helps maintain independence by increasing strength, muscle mass and bone density using hand and ankle weights. Balance exercises enhance agility and decrease the likelihood of falls while flexibility exercises increase joint mobility and reduce the risk of injury. The weight-bearing exercises are done seated and standing behind the back of a chair. These are particularly effective for osteoarthritis sufferers, who benefit from increased, pain-free range of motion. New participants can stop by the center to pick up a doctor’s consent form. Registration required. Suggested donation: $48, for new participants.
Events following the Wednesday luncheon at approximately 1 p.m.:
5/11: JAZZ IT UP with The CVU Singers
Singers from CVU will perform songs, both familiar and new, by students who love nothing more than to share their joyful music with dear friends!
5/18: Home Sweet Home Accessible Workshop:
“Aging in Place Strategies and Techniques” with Ron O’Brien and Mary Ann Ficociello. Learn what some of these strategies and techniques are and how they will improve your quality of life. Discover a unique philosophy of total wellness as well as how to remain in your home safely, independently and comfortably. Enjoy the reassurance of being able to call your house a “home” for life.
