Senior Center News and Café Menu: Summer Fun Begins

New sessions of some old favorites begin the first week of June. Chair Yoga and Gentle Yoga meet Monday mornings, and Pilates meets on Thursday’s at 8:30 a.m. Call the Center for details or just come give it a try.
Join Margaret Aske on Friday mornings from 9-10:30 a.m. to explore The Hero’s Journey together. Dates: June 3, 10, 17, 24. What is a hero/heroine? If we have a hero, who or what is the adversary? Perhaps the enemy is an idea or illness. What can the hero/heroines, real and fictional, teach us? How do their journeys relate to ours? How do we deal with what we fear? Some background material will be provided, but you will be encouraged to share your thoughts on the subject. This course will explore these questions with the hope of having a healthy exchange of ideas and some lively discussions! Margaret taught Literature and Humanities for many years at San Diego city colleges and the state university. Registration required. Fee: $40.
A Kayak Paddlers Gathering will take place on Monday, June 6, beginning at 12:15 p.m. New and old (not literally!) are invited to gather together during Monday Munch.  Join us in creating the future direction of organized kayak trips this summer. Judy Rowe, who founded our Senior Center kayak trips in 2002, will facilitate the discussion. Times have changed, and we will be looking at different approaches to leadership and participation. Please e-mail Kate Mesaros (rkmesaros@hotmail.com) to reserve your place at the table. Suggested donation:  $4 for lunch.
“Stroll ‘n Shoot” Digital Photography with Dan Lovell and Jonathan Hart, Monday afternoons beginning at 1:30 p.m. SHARP! Dates: June 13 and 27. Join us for our new “stroll and shoot” photography trips. Discover more about using your camera and taking pictures at nearby covered bridges, streams, farms and scenes of Lake Champlain. Great fun for beginners and hobbyists. Rain or shine! Dress appropriately for weather conditions, light hiking, walking around a dairy farm and being in the woods. We will return to the center by supper-time. Registration required. Fee: $45 for seniors, $55 for community members. Limit 15.
The first Summer Stroll with Jinny McLoughlin will be on June 15 to the Charlotte Park and Wildlife Refuge, weather allowing, leaving from the Center at 9 a.m. Enjoy spring and summer natural areas on pleasant, slow walks at your own pace on mainly flat surfaces. Registration required. No fee.
A new session of T’ai Chi with David McNally begins on Thursdays from 10-11 a.m. Dates: 6/16, 6/23, 6/30, 7/7, 7/14 and 7/21. Learn Sun style Tai Chi, the youngest of the major styles developed by Sun Lu-Tang (1861-1932). Endorsed by the Arthritis Foundation, the short form (12 movements) is easy to learn and designed to improve balance, flexibility, stability and overall health. David has studied Chinese Kung Fu and Tai Chi since 1985 and trained in Tai Chi for Arthritis as developed by Dr. Paul Lam. Registration required. Fee: $42.
Let’s Ride! with Sojourn Bicycling on Tuesday morning June 21, beginning from the center at 9 a.m. Destination: Shelburne. Get outdoors, meet some folks and enjoy yourself with Charlotte-based Sojourn for this fun, supported, recreational ride. Snacks and refreshments will be provided along with the support van. Registration required. No fee. If you would like to come along, but don’t have a bike, let us know. For $15, Sojourn will provide you with a properly sized bicycle.
English Country Dance returns with Judy Chaves on Wednesday evenings from 4:30-6 p.m. Dates: 6/22, 6/29, 7/6, 7/13 and 7/27. Come learn to English Country dance! The forerunner of American contra dancing, its only prerequisites are a knowledge of right from left (though occasional lapses are quickly forgiven!) and a willingness to move to some of the most glorious music around – traditional and early English tunes. We’ll cover basics as well as more advanced figures, switch partners often (so it doesn’t matter if you sign up as a single or a couple), have you speaking the lingo in no time (“Mirror hey!” “Siding!” “Half figure-of-eight!”), perhaps learn a bit of dance history, and have a lot of fun in the process. Judy has been teaching ECD to all ages for over 10 years. Registration necessary. Fee: $45.
Please note: Judy will be at the center after the luncheon on June 8 for all who would like to try out their dancing feet and learn what English Country Dance is all about.
