The August Artist is Matt Kiedaisch, a photographer whose work spans a range of subject matter with a special emphasis on landscape. Matt employs film and digital mediums with light and form playing a central role in the work. Images from a variety of locations throughout the U.S. explore the textures and character of place and our relationships to our surroundings. Matt has studied under notable photographers Nevada Wier and Meridel Rubenstein, among others. He is an honors graduate of the UVM Environmental Program.
With one week to go at this writing, The Appalachian Trail Walkers have collectively logged in approximately 7,800 miles! Congratulations to all ten teams comprised of 61 walkers. It looks like the Jazzercise Class, the Katadhin team, will make it all 2,160 miles to Springer Mountain in Georgia.
We will celebrate summer and the end of our Appalachian Trail “trek” at the annual Senior Center BBQ on Friday, August 8 beginning at 5 p.m. Our theme will highlight the sights and sounds of Appalachia with music of the region, tales from the “trek” and an old fashioned hoedown after dinner. Bring the whole family, your big appetites, and don’t forget your dancin’ shoes! Registration requested. Fee: $10.
Registration for the September Celebration of Art show is due by August 15. You can pick up a form on the front foyer table or stop in on Friday mornings to chat with the lighthearted artists about the possibilities. Our celebration will culminate on the afternoon of September 3 in a “meet-the-artist” event with light refreshments.
The Senior Center is pleased to host the American Red Cross Blood Drive on Thursday, August 21, from 2 to 7 p.m. The comfortable atmosphere, great snacks and a free magnetic massage by Phyllis Austin of Vermont Wellness make giving the “Gift of Life” at this site most pleasurable.
Please note: the café crews that volunteer to prepare those wonderful Senior Luncheons and Monday Munch all year will be taking a much-deserved vacation for the month of August. You can still make a reservation for the Wednesday August 13lunch by calling the Senior Center at 425-6345. A new crew is being assembled to cover that meal for the month. A $4 donation is requested to help cover costs. Our after-lunch offerings will resume on September 3 with the Celebration of Art – Meet the Artists.
