Happy Thanksgiving!
Just a reminder that the center will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday after the luncheon on Wednesday, November 23, and will reopen on Monday, November 28.
Please look for the Winter Program of activities as an insert in the next issue of The Charlotte News. In the meantime, here are a few offerings to start off the holiday season.
The November Art Exhibit includes works by Marni McKitrick, a local artist who is inspired by the beauty of the Vermont landscape. She paints in watercolor, pastel, acrylic, encaustic and mixed media. She is a Signature Member of the Vermont Watercolor Society and a member of the Vermont Pastel Society and the Northern Vermont Artist’s Association. She is thrilled to be showing some of her work at the Charlotte Senior Center in November.
Back by popular demand, Charlotte Albers returns with A Winter Centerpiece Workshop on Thursday morning, December 15, from 10-11:30 a.m. to help you celebrate the season by making a fresh arrangement for your holiday table using aromatic greens and cuttings, including wine-red dogwood stems, yellow dogwood, winterberry, evergreen holly, rhododendron and fragrant boxwood. Bring a container of your choice that holds water, a pair of pruners and an apron or smock. Feel free to bring something from your own garden to use or contribute. Charlotte will bring in cuttings from her gardens and demonstrate techniques as well as provide information about favorite plants to consider when designing beds and borders for winter interest. Registration required. Minimum: 5. Fee: $18.
Lighthearted Arts with Sabina Evarts on Friday mornings from 10 a.m. - noon is an informal get together of artists pursuing their creativity and discussing all manner of art topics and techniques. This group offers a chance to work on your own with the possibility of sharing knowledge and skill with other people. You are invited to bring whatever you are working on and enjoy the give and take of ideas and encouragement that the group has to offer. No fee.
A Blood Pressure Check with Dawn Weening, R.N., of Fletcher Allen Health Care happens the first Wednesday of each month from 11:30 to noon. This clinic is free, open to the public, and offered before the luncheon.
Genealogy with Carl Tatlock meets on Thursday afternoon, December 1, from 1-3 p.m. Do you want to research your ancestors but not sure how to get started? Or have you hit a brick wall in your research and need some ideas on what to try next? Come meet with others who have worked on their family trees to share ideas, information and the stories of your journey through history. Family Tree Maker and Ancestory.com are available at the center to assist you in your search. No Fee.
Please join us for events following the Wednesday Luncheon beginning at 1 p.m.:
11/30: Annual Tree Decorating
The smell of balsam, seasonal desserts and songs in the air will be the backdrop for you to catch some holiday spirit. All hands will be needed to steady the ladders and help fill the large tree with our handmade ornaments.
12/7: The Nutcracker (the movie)
From an imperial-era Russian Christmas party out of Tolstoy, a young girl named Clara (Gelsey Kirkland) is whisked in dreams to an imaginary world populated by the animated creations of the wizard toy maker Drosselmeier (Alexander Minz). The main attraction is, of course, Mikhail Baryshnikov, one of the greatest classical dancers of the century, at his absolute peak of athleticism and precision. Music lovers who know only “The Nutcracker Suite” will relish the chance to hear this great score all the way through, conducted with lilt and vigor by Kenneth Schermerhorn.
12/14: CVU Madrigal Sing-A-Long
The CVU Madrigal Singers bring a repertoire filled with the joys of the season to one of their favorite venues and welcome the opportunity to be among friends, sharing the gift of song. Come witness the fruits of their fall labors and join them for a few seasonal sing-a-long tunes as we raise the Great Room roof even higher, together!
