Senior center
by Mary Recchia, Senior Center Director

Come see what all the fun is about Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. as the English Country Dance Class continues through April. The only prerequisites are knowledge of right from left (though occasional lapses are quickly forgiven!) and a willingness to move to some of the most glorious music around: traditional and early English tunes. We’ll cover basics as well as more advanced figures, switch partners often (so it doesn’t matter if you sign up as a single or a couple) and have you speaking the lingo in no time. Registration necessary. Fee: $8 per class.
A selection of oil paintings by Charlotte artist Annemie Curlin is the April Art Exhibit. Delicately painted oils tell stories; some reflect psychological realities, while others suggest ancient, earth-centered imagery. A second group consists of local and regional landscapes and still lifes. These closely observed settings attest to Curlin’s love of the natural world.
The AARP Driver Safety Class with Chip Morgan, AARP Volunteer Instructor, is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, April 10 and 11, from noon to 4 p.m. This highly effective Defensive Driving Course (which may enable you to receive an auto insurance discount) reduces the probability of having an auto accident. It is designed for drivers age 50 and older. The course covers important issues that affect older drivers, such as physical changes and limitations, normal driving situations and environmental conditions, safe driving and vehicle information, and the effects of medication on the motorist. It is taught in two four-hour classroom sessions. The course provides drivers the opportunity to fine-tune driving skills and become safer and better drivers. Upon completion of the course, you will receive a certificate valid for three years. Pre-registration required. Class limit: 25. Fee: $10 payable to AARP.
Carol Schreiber from The Human Hands Studio returns for a second Beading Series on Tuesday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon. Dates: 4/15, 4/22, 4/29. Carol will again offer a beginner, three-class workshop that will include:
4/15 - Learn the basics of bead stringing. Create a one-of-a-kind necklace or bracelet using one of Carol’s handmade glass beads. Learn about the right materials, resources for materials and jewelry designing.
4/22 - Design and create a bracelet and earrings or a multi-strand necklace. We will explain advanced stringing techniques and introduce different findings (clasps, stations, cones and metal spacers).
4/29 - Take all your knowledge from the last two weeks and use it to learn basic wire wrapping and create several pairs of earrings.
Registration required. Course fee: $5 per session includes all materials.
The center is pleased to host the American Red Cross Blood Drive on Thursday, April 17, from 2 to 7 p.m. The comfortable atmosphere, great snacks and a free magnetic massage by Phyllis Austin of Vermont Wellness make giving the “Gift of Life” at this site most pleasurable.
Our glorious Senior Luncheons are held every Wednesday at noon. Reservations are necessary in advance and can be made by calling the Senior Center at 425-6345. A $4 donation is requested to help cover costs. Those who do not wish to share lunch with us are welcome to drop in around 1 p.m. to enjoy the after lunch offerings:
4/9: Get Fit with Kit Sayers
The Jazzercise class, now in its third year at the center, would like to introduce you to fitness that’s not intimidating, just invigorating. You’ll forget you are exercising as you twist, dance, kick box, weight lift and stretch to popular music. Come get Fit with Kit. It is just plain fun!
4/23: Bite-sized Biography with Holly Lukens
Overwhelmed by the thought of writing your entire life story all at once? Personal biographer Holly Lukens encourages you to chose one specific memory or event in your life and then guides you through the process of writing a short piece about it in this hands-on and creative workshop. All materials provided.
