Seniors take a hike: When you were a child, did your family visit Caribou, Maine, or Washington, D.C., or Key West, Florida? If so, then you probably traveled on Route 1. Folks at the Charlotte Senior Center will be “virtually” walking Route 1 from Maine to Florida this summer and could use your help. Consider becoming part of a team of walkers, share memories of family trips, and help collect information (historical, geographical, culinary, sports, political, etc.) that will be used to create trivia questions and crossword puzzles. Please contact Patricia Coleman at 425-2980 for more details.
Save the date! Our Annual Plant Sale will be held on Saturday, May 29, where you will find buds, blossoms and bargains. Please call Wendy Pierce at 985-8547 if you would like anything dug or divided. She would be happy to meet you at your gardens. Seedling or plant donations will be accepted at the center on Friday, May 28. Hope to see you there!
Samuel Lurie, MEd and certified hypnotherapist, returns for another session of Motivate for Spring With Self-Hypnosis on Friday mornings from 9-10:30 a.m., May 7 and 14. Learn what hypnosis is and how to customize it to meet YOUR goals. This workshop will explain ways in which we can increase motivation and focus and use the power of our subconscious minds to help us feel more vibrant and content. Hypnosis can be used to get better sleep, manage pain, build confidence, change eating habits and more. Registration required. Fee: $20 for seniors, $40 for community members.
Let There Be Trees: The Rutter Tree Committee Project with Lawrence S. Hamilton Tuesday morning, May 11, at 10 a.m. Recently, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of newly planted trees along Charlotte’s roadsides. They are there thanks to The Rutter Family Fund and donations from the town’s tree lovers. Come to an open meeting of the Shelburne/Charlotte Garden Club to hear Charlotte Tree Warden Larry Hamilton tell about the special value of trees, the story of this project and the result of this source of funding. Hear how it is implemented, how various species of trees and locations are chosen, and what we can expect in the future from this project. Larry Hamilton is a Professor Emeritus in Forestry, Cornell University, and Charlotte Tree Warden. Light refreshments served. No fee.
Join Marty Morrissey for the last two Spring Road Hikes in the Champlain Valley.
Hike #3: Tuesday, May 11, to Jonesville departs from the center at 9 a.m. Hike starts at the old Long Trail parking lot on River Road in Jonesville. This year we will walk back along River Road for ¼ mile to Honey Hollow Road. This is a gravel road that climbs up into Honey Hollow, a summer and hunting camp community sitting under Camel’s Hump on the northwest side. The road continues on for miles into the woods. We will go up about two miles and return. Please bring a snack. Hike #4: Tuesday, May 18, departs the center at 8:30 a.m. for a drive over Brandon Gap on Route 73 for 14.6 miles to State Forest Road 45. Hike begins at parking lot and follows Road 45 for 3 miles to the Chittenden Brook Campground, a curvy wooded road with very little elevation gain. Please bring lunch. A stop in Brandon on our way home for a snack or dessert anyone?
Our glorious Senior Luncheons are held every Wednesday at noon. Reservations are necessary in advance and can be made by calling the Senior Center at 425-6345.
Suggested donation: $4. Those who do not wish to share lunch with us are welcome to drop in around 1 p.m. to enjoy the after lunch offerings:
5/12: A Kayaker’s Guide to Lake Champlain with Margaret Holden and Catherine Frank
Cathy Frank and Margy Holden, authors of A Kayakers Guide to Lake Champlain will give a talk and PowerPoint presentation about some of the things they learned over a period of four years as they paddled about 700 miles following the shoreline of Lake Champlain.
