Senior Center Happenings
by Mary Recchia, Activities Coordinator
Just a reminder that the Senior Center will be closed on Friday, July 3.
Our July artist, Charlotte resident John Calcagni, started painting after he retired from teaching in 2000. He began with pastels by taking classes at the Charlotte Senior Center with Shirley Thompson. Later, he became intrigued with watercolors and has pursued watercolor classes both at the Senior Center and in Florida. His subjects range from flowers and birds to local sites and landscapes, in both Vermont and Florida.
Genealogy with Carl Tatlock will meet on Thursday, July 2, at 1 p.m. Do you want to research your ancestors but are not sure how to get started? Or have you hit a wall in your research and need some ideas on what to try next? Come meet with others who have worked on their family trees to share ideas, information and the stories of your journey through history. Family Tree Maker and Ancestory.com are available at the Senior Center to assist you in your search. No fee.
Don’t miss the Charlotte Town Party on Saturday, July 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Stop by the Senior Center to see the art exhibit, tour our facilities and, of course, the coffee is always on!
A new session of Chair Yoga with Tiny Sikkes begins on Monday, July 13, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Using chairs for balance and for all seated postures, this class makes yoga accessible to those who are challenged by balance, the ability to come to the floor or any physical limitations. We’ll cover the full range of yoga postures and benefits while sitting comfortably in chairs – improving breath capacity, strength and flexibility. A great class if you are concerned about adapting in a standard class. Registration necessary. Fee: $60. Regular Yoga continues Monday from 11 a.m. to 12:15 a.m. with a new session starting on July 20.
The Gentleman’s Eatery with Mahlon Haines will be cooking up breakfast on Thursday, July 16, beginning at 7:30 a.m. Whether you’re single, want to upgrade your skills or maybe never thought you’d need to learn to cook, here’s a chance to experience the joys and practicalities of cooking while having fun at the same time. Registration required. Suggested donation: $5 to cover the cost of food.
To further enjoy the lake theme of our annual walk this year, we will be having organized Walking Buddies every Wednesday morning before the luncheon beginning at 9:30 from 6/10 – 7/29. The sites will be planned so that you can do a short, medium or long walk with the short walks being fairly flat. If you are looking for a companion to walk with while adding miles to your team total, come join the flock.
Our glorious Senior Luncheons are held every Wednesday at noon. Reservations are necessary in advance and can be made by calling the Senior Center at 425-6345. A $4 donation is requested to help cover costs. With the arrival of summer, Monday Munch will be offering lighter, cooler menus through the end of July. Always healthy, delicious and homemade, each menu will offer a fresh salad and a choice of soup or special creation, bread, beverage and those fabulous homemade deserts. A $4 donation is suggested, and reservations are not required.
New addition – After the luncheon on July 15, please join Elizabeth Von Muggenthaler for a presentation of her Lake Champlain research. In search of a creature that is capable of echolocation, Fauna Communications found echolocation in Lake Champlain and has presented scientific evidence that a unique, possibly severely endangered creature needs to be studied further. Only whales and dolphins are known to produce echolocation or bio-sonar...so what is making this signal?
