Senior Center Bustling with Activities
by Mary Recchia, Activities Coordinator
The Winter Program of activities will be an insert in the next issue of the Charlotte News. A few late November/early December items are highlighted below for your calendar consideration.
The Charlotte Artisan Sale provides a unique selection of fine art and crafts by local artists of all ages. You can support local artists and the Charlotte Senior Center while doing this year’s holiday shopping on Saturday, November 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The café will be open to enhance your shopping pleasure.
The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts has generously offered available tickets to “VSO: Go Figure!” on Friday, December 5, at 11:30 a.m. Come explore the math and physics of music—it’s amazing how many ways these disciplines intersect! You will be challenged (can you play a rhythm of 4 against 7?), intrigued (what on Earth is the Fibonacci series?), and enlightened (from Mozart’s math to Schoenberg’s surrealism). Aaron Copland’s Rodeo illustrates math-related concepts such as intervals, note division and meter—not to mention the science of hearing. A special collaboration with the Young Writers Project and a student composer completes the equation: we’ll hear a six-minute world premiere inspired by six different six-word stories—all from the creative minds of Vermont youth! This is a wonderful opportunity to see a show at the Flynn during the day at a fraction of the regular cost. Registration is through the Senior Center and required one week prior to the show. Fee: $8.
Survive and THRIVE the Holidays with experienced health educator and hypnotherapist, Samuel Lurie. This workshop series will teach you how to reduce stress and feel happier by building up positive thoughts and beliefs. The process will increase your ability to relax and manage stressful situations. It will also help you identify some specific ways to alleviate tension when your buttons get pushed. Use self-hypnosis to reduce stress and boost joy! Tuesdays, 9:30 -10:30 a.m. Please note date changes: Dec. 9, 16, 23. Registration required. $10 per session, $25 for all three.
Our glorious Senior Luncheons are held every Wednesday at noon. Reservations are necessary and can be made by calling the Senior Center at 425-6345. A $4 donation is requested to help cover costs. Those who do not wish to share lunch with us are welcome to drop in around 1 p.m. to enjoy the after lunch offerings.
There will be no luncheon on November 26, and the center will be closed on November 27 and 28 for the Thanksgiving holiday.
12/3: Annual tree decorating
The smell of balsam, seasonal desserts and songs in the air will be the backdrop for you to catch some holiday spirit. All hands will be needed to steady the ladders and help fill the large tree with our hand- made ornaments. The luncheon dessert and coffee will be served in the Great Room.
12/10: CVU Madrigal Singers
The CVU Madrigal Singers make their appearance at the center in the midst of a very busy season includes performing for the Vermont Children’s Trust Foundation at its annual “Polar Express” event, recording for “Across the Fence” and singing at the Flynn on December 16 with Eileen Ivers for “A Celtic Christmas.” The 14 singers have been in rehearsal since September and bring a variety of songs that will offer hope for the winter season – and for this generation of young people!
