A round of applause to all the CCS seventh and eighth graders who participated in the Lend a Hand afternoon. Your kind, helpful “brawn” was most appreciated. Thanks to all!
This year our Annual Summer Walking Program will be an Appalachian Trail “Trek,” A Virtual Walk in the Woods. We will plot our walking progress along the Appalachian Trail starting at Mount Katahdin, Maine, crossing over the high peaks in 15 states and finishing the 2,160 mile trek at Springer Mountain, Georgia. You will keep track of the steps you take each day using a pedometer and go at your own pace and ability throughout your daily routine. Groups are chosen so that your steps can be pooled together, and your group progress is what produces the “virtual” walk on the large map in the foyer. It’s all for fun! Pedometers will be available to purchase. Registration begins Tuesday, May 27. No fee.
A Strawberry Shortcake Kickoff pep rally for the Appalachian “Trek” will be held on Friday, June 6, at 1 p.m. This will be a time to meet your captain and team members and to learn or relearn your pedometer, place your flags at the beginning of the trail on the map, cheer your team to great walking and feast on strawberry shortcake!
Beading Classes will continue this summer with Carol Schreiber from The Human Hands Studio. Session I dates are Monday afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m. on 6/16, 6/23, 6/30. Each class will be divided into a beginner and intermediate/advanced group to accommodate all levels. The beginner group will learn the basics of bead stringing, the proper materials, resources for those materials and jewelry designing. You will create a one-of-a-kind necklace, bracelet and earrings using Carol’s handmade glass beads. The intermediate/advanced group will learn advanced stringing techniques, be introduced to quality findings (clasps, stations, cones and metal spacers), and have an exquisite choice of beads to create a project of your choosing. Registration required. Fees include all materials--$30 for beginners group, $60 for advanced group, each session.
Watercolor Landscape Painting “Summer, Winter, Spring and Fall” with Anne Gordon, will run four Tuesday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon. Dates: 6/10, 6/17, 6/24, 7/1. This class will address some of the special problems particular to painting landscape in watercolor. All levels of experience are welcome from beginner to the more experienced. Students will supply their own materials; a suggested list will be available at the center. Anne is a professional painter, teacher for more than 20 years and a signature member of Vermont Watercolor Society. Registration required. Fee: $60.
Bridge. All are welcome to join others every Thursday evening at 7 p.m. as our non-competitive bridge game resumes for the summer. No fee.
Our glorious Senior Luncheons are held every Wednesday at noon. Reservations are necessary in advance and can be made by calling the Senior Center at 425-6345. A $4 donation is requested to help cover costs. Those who do not wish to share lunch with us are welcome to drop in around 1 p.m. to enjoy the after lunch offerings:
6/18: Intracoastal Waterway with Dale Hyerstay. Join Dale Hyerstay on a pictorial trip down the Intracoastal Waterway. The actual trip took place last winter as the Hyerstays joined the Brodys in returning their trawler to Florida on a 640-mile leg of the journey from Solomon’s Islands, in the Chesapeake Bay to Savannah, Georgia.
6/25: Hearing Screening with Dr. Elizabeth Adams, an audiologist from the Eleanor M. Luce Center at UVM. Dr. Adams will bring portable equipment. Graduate students will offer a hearing screening that can tell you whether you might want to seek further evaluation. Please register for this offering at the host desk.
