Tom Moreau, general manager of the Chittenden Solid Waste District (CSWD) reports that tipping fees paid by haulers and residents for recycling were cut in half earlier this year, due to increased demand for the materials – a good sign that the economy is recovering. The CSWD commission is considering at its meeting this week a proposal to reduce the fees further, possibly to zero for fiscal year 2011.
The CSWD is also on track for closing the Intervale compost site, as required by FEMA and the Vermont Environmental Court, by February 2011. A new, state-of-the-art facility will be opened at a Redmond Road site in Williston owned by the CSWD. The permitting process is underway for a covered facility that will provide significant control over the manufacturing of the compost. According to Moreau, the $1.25 million cost will be covered from CSWD surpluses for FY 2009 and 2011, including an anticipated surplus of $712,000 from this year’s profitable recycling program.
