Are your skis and sleds collecting dust this winter? Start looking for your skates and check out the ice rink by the school. Ed Sulva and Jeff Payne have been working with the crazy winter weather conditions to keep the ice rink usable since there isn’t a whole lot else to do. There have been the expected challenges of temperatures, snow and rain. But new this year is the challenge of people driving their cars on the ice. What a disappointment that people are choosing to vandalize the ice in this way. It makes so much more work for the volunteers who are trying to keep the skating great for the community. Residents, PLEASE, if you see cars on the ice when passing by the rink, call the police.
When we finally get snow (I know it will be here soon) consider getting a discounted pass to Smuggler’s Notch from Hinesburg Recreation. Here are the Sunday dates for this year: January 29, February 5 and 12, March 4 and 11. Adult lift ticket/rental or lessons are $25, youth (6-17) tickets are $20. Information and forms are available by link on the Charlotte website.
Charlotte has a table tennis champion in our community: Ken Cameron. He would like to give Charlotte citizens a chance to play and learn the game of table tennis. He will be at the Charlotte Central School in the multipurpose room (MPR) on Sundays to give people a chance to try it out. Ages 8 to 99 are welcome to participate in this free event on February 5, 12 and 19 from 2-4 p.m. Please register with Charlotte Recreation at 425-6129.
Open Arms Riding Academy is offering two days of after school riding lessons beginning in March and another after April break. Local intermediate riders between ages 8-15 can participate on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Students can either take the bus or get dropped off at 3:45 p.m. (Wednesday and/or Thursday), have a snack, help with barn chores and then ride as a group. All riders must be able to groom, tack and ride (walk/trot) independently. Students can sign up for either a one-day-per-week, six week session, priced at $195 or a two-day-per-week, six week session, priced at $315. There is space for only four riders at this time, so please sign up right away on the Charlotte Recreation Forms.
Starting to plan your children’s summer? Charlotte has some great summer camps already scheduled with more to come. Open Arms Riding Academy will have two sessions again this summer, June 18-22 and August 13-17. Challenger British Soccer Camp will run July 16-20, and Challenger British Sport Camp will run August 6-10. Vermont Voltage Soccer will run August 20-24. Local Motion Bike Skills Camp will run in Shelburne this year July 30-August 3. We will also be adding Hoops Basketball Camp, Summer Tennis Camp, Tim Serrell Camp and Celtic Dance Camp to the schedule once their dates are finalized. Check regularly for updates at charlottevt.org.
