Primary Results: Yantachka Wins by 55 Votes
September 24, 2010, UPDATED, by Nancy Wood
Mike Yantachka has secured the Democratic Nomination for State Representative from Charlotte and a portion of Hinesburg. The votes from Charlotte were Yantachka 374, Charles Russell 323, and Mike Kurt 81. The Hinesburg tally was 13 votes for Yantachka and 9 for Russell, making the total 387 Yantachka to 332 for Russell.
In a statement released late Tuesday night, Yantachka said, “I want to thank my family and my supporters who helped to make this result possible. I also want to congratulate Charlie Russell and Mike Kurt on running strong and positive campaigns. They worked very hard and deserve our thanks for offering the residents of Charlotte and Hinesburg their services. I’m looking forward to the remainder of the campaign and the general election.
When I announced my candidacy, I said I wanted to run a door-to-door campaign and get to know as many of the voters in Charlotte that I could. Over the last six weeks I’ve knocked on more than a thousand doors throughout the district. There are parts of Charlotte I still have to visit and will do so between now and November.”
Yantachka will face Ed Stone, who was unopposed in the Republican Primary, and Independent Robin Reid in the General Election on November 2. They are vying for the Chittenden District 1-2 seat left vacant when three-term Representative Scott Orr decided not to run for re-election.
According to Town Clerk Mary Mead, a total of 1020 voters turned out at the polls, 35% of the 2,896 registered. Of those, 829 chose the Democratic ballot, 189 Republican and 2 Progressive.
This compares to a then-record turnout ten years ago, when 32% of registered Charlotters voted in the September 12, 2000, Primary Election. 305 chose the Democratic ballot and 500 the Republican.
This year, in the race for Governor, Matt Dunn led the five Democrats with 204 votes, to 200 for Deb Markowitz, 192 for Doug Racine, 168 for Peter Shumlin, and 42 for Susan Bartlett.
