New Trees in Town
by Larry Hamilton, Charlotte Tree Warden, December 1, 2011, page 6.....Using much of the remaining Rutter Family Charlotte Beautification Fund, plus some tree donations, we have put in a few more trees around town.
The Barber Cemetery now has three new sugar maples to help replace the senescent trees that had to be removed. A new tree in memory of the late Francis (Frank) Thornton has been planted near the stump of an old veteran maple, near the southeast corner fence (see photo.) This was generously funded by Carrie Mackillop and Peter Demick and is now listed on the Memorial and Specially Dedicated Tree List posted in the Town Hall. And thanks to Cemetery Commissioner Stephen Brooks, we have a gift from Catherine Boerema of Seattle, Washington, that enabled us to plant a maple in the central portion of the cemetery. We thank these donors. Also, Davey Tree Company has planted one along the south fence as part mediation for unauthorized cutting along a town road. As part of the same settlement, Davey planted a sugar maple on the south side of the Rule covered bridge as a replacement for one that was struck and destroyed by a car that went down the embankment there.
A sugar maple was planted to replace a dead one in a roadside row on Cuillard property just south of East Charlotte Village on Spear Street. In the West Charlotte Village, on the west side just south of the monument on Greenbush Road, a sugar maple and a Sienna red maple were planted at Patty Horsford’s home. And to wind up, an autumn-blaze red maple was established in the parking area at the Charlotte Park and Wildlife Refuge off Greenbush Road.
This brings the total number of roadside trees planted in Charlotte to 436 over a five-year period.
