We give thanks for our dedicated volunteers.
Who are they and what do they do?
Ann Batchelder, David Cross, Valerie Graham, Dorrice Hammer, Beth Merritt, Dorothy Saba, Jan Schwarz, Joanne Wolfe and Janet Yantachka enhance library services on a daily basis and in a variety of ways. They are book menders, circulation assistants, shelvers, shelf readers and special project assistants. In addition, Kim Keyes designs, plants and maintains the glorious gardens. Judy Tuttle fills the position of Art Curator, locating and scheduling artists and at times assisting in hanging the shows. It is with sincere gratitude that we thank them for their gifts of service.
Local author Ron Krupp told audience members at the October 26th evening program that “local food production has a multiplier effect for the entire state of Vermont.” Krupp made his remarks while presenting his new book, Lifting the Yoke: Local Solutions to America’s Farm and Food Crisis. For a little over an hour, he shared information pertaining to the marketing and distribution of Vermont products; the importance of CSAs; reasons to buy local and the disturbing reality of hunger in Vermont. Patrons can find Ron’s book in the library collection.

Georgia Edwards, Circulation Assistant, reviews The White Queen by Philippa Gregory.
Attention lovers of fictional English history and fans of Philippa Gregory: The White Queen is now available at the library. It is Book I in her new series, The Cousins’ Wars (or The War of the Roses.)
This novel takes the reader to pre-Henry VIII and to the story of his grandmother, Elizabeth Woodville, consort to King Edward IV, sister-in-law to the infamous Richard III, and mother of the missing princes in the Tower. A Lancastrian by birth, she marries the young Edward, a Yorkist, for love and ambition. Together they scheme and battle for the throne of the deposed Henry VI and a dynasty of kings. License is taken with Elizabeth’s story to portray her as a descendent of the goddess, Melusina, capable of witchcraft.
Gregory has painted The White Queen as a strong, ambitious woman whose choices lead to scheming, betrayal, heartbreak, success and excess.
Critics may point out that Gregory may have played too fast and loose with the facts of English history. But it is, after all, work of fiction. It inspired this reader to research the history behind it.
Other books at the library related to this subject include:
Blood and Roses, Helen Castor
The Lives of the Kings and Queens of England,
Antonia Frazer
The Tragedy of Richard III, William Shakespeare

Who’s got the mitten?
December 12, 10:30 a.m. to noon
A family program for all ages, this lively morning will feature mitten storytelling, mitten crafts, mitten-knitting demonstrations and the debut of our mitten tree. Help us decorate the tree with new mittens for homeless families. If you and your family are feeling crafty, you can pick up a pattern to knit a pair of mittens or to create a pair of easy-to-sew felted mittens. We will accept mitten donations (handmade or purchased) throughout the month of December, and then send them along to local charities. Join us for a festive start to the winter season and a chance to help your neighbors in need. Mitten refreshments will be served!
