Photo spread in paper described:
The original Lake Champlain Bridge (top left and middle right) was completed in 1929, connecting Chimney Point in Addison, Vermont, with Crown Point, New York. In the fall of 2009 it was condemned as unsafe and closed on October 16, shortly after New York’s premier Quadricentennial Celebration, which included an art project of puzzle pieces joining New York and Vermont (bottom right). Thousands of commuters and tourists were detoured through Charlotte via the Charlotte-Essex Ferry until free ferry service began near the bridge. The old bridge was imploded on a snowy December 29, 2009. Within less than two years, and despite blizzards, floods and Tropical Storm Irene, the beautiful new bridge was designed, built, dedicated and opened on November 7, 2011. The above view is from the fort at Crown Point the day before the bridge opened, the last full day of ferry service. The far right photo of an antique car crossing the bridge was taken two days later. Photos by Roger Binkerd, Robbie Stanley and Nancy Wood.
