Mt. Philo Rescue Tests High-angle Training

Both Fire and Rescue were called to Mount Philo State Park for a hiker over the bank on July 14. They responded to the park and found that two people were now over the bank, as someone had tried to help the original hiker and became stuck as well. Vergennes Fire Department and Middlebury Technical Rescue were called to the scene to assist with the rescue.
The hikers were on the south face, and, because there are areas of washouts on that trail, the hikers had to be brought back up the “old washout stair.” The Charlotte Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department is very familiar with this area, as they hold an annual two-day high-angle rope-rescue training in that same area.
The rescue involved sending two of Charlotte’s rope-rescue technicians down the face, placing one victim in a harness and the other in a Stokes litter and bringing them back up to the trail with a haul system. The victim in the litter was hauled farther up to the top with several rescuer-assisted haul systems and then transported to the parking area in the department’s mule, where he was assessed, cleared and released.
