Just for the month of August the Blood Pressure Clinic will be held on the second Wednesday of the month, August 11, from 11:30 a.m.-noon.

Join us for our Annual BBQ Celebrating Summer on Friday, August 13. Bring a friend. Bring the family. Join the fun. Share the food. Enjoy the music. Appetizers at 5 p.m., grill at 6 p.m. and dessert at 6:45 p.m. Then, enjoy the music by Mary Provencher and Friends (Coffee House fame). She promises to play many of our favorites. Registration requested. Fee: $12 per person.

The entry form deadline for our fifth annual Celebration of Art is Friday, August 13. Extra forms with details are available on the table in the front foyer.

Don’t forget to call in your steps for the Rt. 1 Walking Program! Many have set their sights on those BIG southern states this week, hoping to leave the hot weather of New England behind!

Walking Buddies complements our annual summer walking program. Organized walks will be held every Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. before the luncheon. The sites are planned so that you can do a short, medium or long walk; the short walks are fairly flat. Destinations and sign-up sheets are located at the host desk.

The Charlotte Historical Society presents “Sprightly Steps: Vermont’s Contra and Square Dancing Tradition” by Adam Boyce on Sunday, July 18, at 3 p.m. The program is co-sponsored with the Chittenden Historical Society, which will have its annual meeting at 2 p.m. All are welcome at 3 p.m. with refreshments that will include an ice cream social, Ben & Jerry’s for sure!

Tuesday, August 3, at 7 p.m. the Historical Society presents “Sir Wilfred Grenfell.” This noted missionary lived in Charlotte at Camp Kinloch on the lakeshore, a series of cabins and the family home shared by Dr. Grenfell, his wife and three children. The illustrated talk is by the Rev. George Klohck, a resident of Bridport, who has compiled biographical material on this Newfoundland pioneer.  Refreshments to follow.

A new session of Gentle Yoga with Jean White and Chair Yoga with Tiny Sikkes begins on Monday, July 26. Session II Dates: 7/26, 8/2, 8/9, 8/16, 8/23, 8/30. Poses are adapted to meet individual needs and all fitness levels. Please bring a blanket and yoga mat. Registration necessary. Fee: $60 per session.

“Sail” by ferry to Essex for a Mid-Day Concert and Lunch with Harriett Brainard and Mary Harry on Thursday morning, July 29. We will meet at the Senior Center at 10 a.m. to go together and board the 10:30 a.m. Charlotte ferry. The concert will be held at the Essex Community Church a one-block walk from the ferry dock.The concert starts at 11:30 a.m., and lasts about 45 minutes.

Admission is free; donations are appreciated. Enjoy singer guitarist and bassist Joan Crane and Steve Feinbloom. Afterward you can visit the unusual shops in town and lunch together at The Old Dock Restaurant on the waterfront. We will return home to Charlotte via ferry by 4 p.m. Registration required. Fee: $5.25 for round trip ferry ride.

AARP Driver Safety Class with Jim Inglis, AARP Volunteer Instructor, will be held on Tuesday, August 3, from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. A classroom refresher course for drivers aged 50 and over, this highly effective Defensive Driving Course (which may enable you to receive an Auto Insurance Discount) covers important issues that affect older drivers, such as physical changes and limitations, normal driving situations and environmental conditions, safe driving and vehicle information, and the effects of medication on the motorist. The course provides drivers the opportunity to fine-tune driving skills and become a safer and better driver. Upon completion of the course, you will receive a certificate valid for three years, a course workbook and other instructional material. The course is taught in one half-day session. Registration required. Class limit: 25. Fee: $14 ($12 for AARP members) payable to AARP.
