MATHCOUNTS Competition
MATHCOUNTS Competition
February 10, 2011, page 5.....

Good luck to the 11 CCS students participating in the Northwest MATHCOUNTS Competition on Saturday, February 12, sponsored by the UVM College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences and the Vermont Society of Professional Engineers. Approximately 200 students from 15 middle schools will compete individually and in teams, in written and fast-paced oral formats, on subjects that include probability, statistics, algebra and geometry.  The excitement will culminate in a dramatic single-elimination tournament during the Countdown Round in Carpenter Auditorium from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. where the top 12 students will compete against each other and the clock in front of an enthusiastic audience. Tough questions will be asked, like:
A sequence starts with the term 2222.  Each succeeding term is found by adding 1010 to the previous term.  What is the sum of the sixth and seventh terms?  (Answer: 15,554) Jordan ran 2 miles in half the time it took Steve to run 3 miles.  If it took Steve 24 minutes to run 3 miles, how many minutes would it take Jordan to run 5 miles?  (Answer: 30 minutes)
“The mathematical abilities displayed by the students throughout the competition are impressive but the Countdown Round is inspiring,” says Prof. Doug Dickey, Regional Coordinator of MATHCOUNTS, and Assistant Dean and Lecturer in the UVM Department of Mathematics and Statistics (also a sponsor of the Northwest Competition).“This is a great opportunity for us to support some of the really talented students from around the state.”
The top teams and individuals from each of the Regional Competitions will go on to compete in the Vermont MATHCOUNTS Statewide Competition to be held Saturday, March 26, at Vermont Technical College in Randolph, Vermont. The top four individuals from the State Competition will form the Vermont team that will travel to the Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition in Washington, D.C., May 5-8, 2011.
More than 600 Vermont middle school students are challenged to answer mathematical questions during the annual MATHCOUNTS Regional Competitions held throughout Vermont in February.
