New nonfiction titles round out library’s juvenile collection. With funds in hand from the Winnie Belle Learned Fund, the library added more than 100 new books to the juvenile nonfiction collection. The titles, on everything from penguin behavior to the universe to world religions, expands this collection by nearly ten percent and updates many key topic areas including Internet use, planetary research and global warming. The library is grateful to the Vermont Public Library Foundation (VPLF) and Dr. Burnett Rawson for the grant awarded in January from the Winne Belle Learned Fund. Dr. Rawson established this fund in 2007, together with the VPLF, to “focus on the efforts of public libraries in Vermont to foster literacy [and] love of learning … among children of all ages and their families.” The library invites all members of the community to stop in to see the new additions to the juvenile nonfiction collection and select some great new titles to take home and enjoy.
Changes in interlibrary loan availability
On April 27 State Librarian Martha Reid announced that, as a result of mandated budget and position cuts, the two remaining regional libraries will be closed. In addition, four positions within the Department of Libraries have been eliminated.
Because space is a challenge and a determinate in the size of collection we offer, we have relied heavily on the regional libraries to fill our interlibrary loan requests. They provided the materials and paid half of the shipping costs. The minimum amount of postage required for a round trip interlibrary loan is $4.24; many exceed this amount.
We will continue to try to fill interlibrary loans, but we will be making requests from libraries that have limited staff and hours, and may not have the postage budget necessary to participate in the interlibrary loan process.
If you are a resident of Charlotte, you may want to take advantage of your Homecard privileges by using your library card at any library in Chittenden County (with the exception of the Fletcher Free Library in Burlington). You can search individual library catalogs online or we will be happy to do an availability search for you.

On display - Jonathan Silverman’s baseball glove collection
Among the signs of spring are robins, flowers and, of course, baseball season. We are delighted to have on display a sampling of ten gloves from Mr. Silverman’s collection. They include his dad’s Duke Snider glove, his childhood four-finger Rawlings model, an early 1900s horsehair-filled catcher’s mitt and others that represent different shapes and models. Included in the display are several bats and balls, along with a watercolor and drawings. Stop by and take a look; hopefully these gloves will spark your own memories and stories.
On our walls
Painted during the years 2007-2008, Robin Coleburn’s grand paintings of sheep, cows and horses transport farm animals from the pasture and barn to the walls of the library. This gifted artist has exhibited her paintings in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and throughout Vermont. We are delighted to offer this exhibit.
