From a Library to the White House
After learning that there were no children’s books on the shelves of the White House library, a school in upstate New York has prepared a box of books using suggestions from kids and grown-ups at the Milton Terrace South Elementary School. The idea is to offer the new president’s daughters, Sasha and Malia Obama, some new reading material in their new home. Here is the list of winners from each grade:
Kindergarten: The Napping House by Audrey Wood and The Alphabet Rescue by Audrey Wood.
First Grade: Polar Express by Chris van Allsburg and Yoko’s World of Kindness by Rosemary Wells.
Second Grade: Duck for President by Doreen Cronin and Officer Buckle & Gloria by Peggy Rathman.
Third Grade: Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeffrey Kinney and Spiderwick Chronicles: The Field Guide Book 1 by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black.
Fourth Grade: Marley: A Dog Like No Other by John Grogan and The Witches by Roald Dahl.
Fifth Grade: The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo and Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo.
(Information about the project is from School Library Journal, November 10, 2008.)

What books would you send to the White House for the new first family? You can send your ideas to Margaret or Cheryl at our new e-mail address: youthservices@charlottepubliclibrary.org.
Coming Up
Fourth Annual January Bake-Off and a Family Friendly media meeting…as well as a host of new books, including the latest Diary of a Wimpy Kid book, a whole new Rainbow Fairy series and news from the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants: Three Willows by Ann Brashares.
