Darfur Now, written and directed by Ted Braun, is the critically acclaimed documentary that explores the Darfur conflict through the experiences of six individuals: a village woman who became a rebel after her infant son was killed; a leader of displaced Darfurians in the Hamadea camp; a war-time prosecutor; the head of the UN’s World Food Program in West Darfur; a young Californian who successfully led the fight for the state of California to divest funds from Darfur; and actor, Don Cheadle, a Darfur activist .
Darfur Now, won the NAACP Image Award for best documentary of 2007 and was named one of 2007’s top five documentaries by the National Board of Review. Ted Braun is the son of Dr. Theodore and Mrs. Joan Braun of Charlotte. The DVD is available for check out.

Patron Recommendation - The Dr. Siri Paiboun Mysteries by Colin Cotterill
This is a gem of a recommendation. It’s hard to classify this series because it deals with themes of murder and corruption, while at the same time written with wit and humor, not to mention a bit of mysticism. The setting is Laos, 1975, under the communist Pathet Lao rule. Dr. Siri Paiboun, 72 years old and ready to retire, is pressed into service by the state as its only coroner, even though he knows next to nothing about autopsies. The author builds suspense by stacking one subplot on top of the other for what is a truly engrossing read. If you like Alexander McCall Smith you might want to take a look at this series.
