The Vermont State Constitution grants all inhabitants of the State the right to hunt on any land that is not legally posted. Landowners have various reasons for wanting to prohibit hunting, ranging from safety of family and pets to concern about damage to their property. Bright yellow “POSTED” signs are often purchased from the local hardware store and tacked up on handy trees. But does that make the land “legally posted”?
Here are the requirements from state statutes:
Signs must be not less than 11½ inches wide by 8 inches high.
Lettering and background must be of contrasting colors.
The signs must contain the wording that hunting, fishing or trapping or any combination of the three are prohibited or forbidden.
The signs must be at each corner of the land being posted and not over 400 feet apart along the boundaries, legible and dated each year.
The posting must be recorded annually in the Town Clerk’s office. The fee is $5.
