William Hodgson-Walker, the CCS seventh-grader who won the statewide geography bee, represented Vermont at the national competition in Washington. William fell just short of making the final round, but he was one in a select group of only 54 state finalists nationwide.
With the guidance of CCS Enrichment Coordinator/Coach Celeste Adams, William and other CCS students Finn Simpkins and Zach Toensing, Bennett Cazyoux, Ben Hyams and Hayden Kjelleren won the Geography Bee trophy at the State Finals held at Northfield High School on May 15. Charlotte defeated Christ the King and Shelburne Community School one week earlier in the District round. The Enrichment Coordinator position is being eliminated from the CCS budget for year 2010-2011.
While in Washington, William met with both Vermont Senators, and made friends with the other students. According to William’s mother, Suzy Hodgson, concerns were raised at the Geo Bee about geography being cut in school budgets across the country.
