School Tax Rates Lowered; Scott Orr Steps Down

Two items of interest: The Legislature has passed lower than expected school tax rates, and Charlotte’s State Representative Scott Orr has decided not to run for re-election.
The Legislature passed the final tax bill last night, which includes school tax rates lower than originally expected. The rates will be the same as last year (homestead rate will be .86 and the nonresidential rate will be 1.35). The Governor is expected to sign the bill.
This reduces the tax impact of the proposed school budget that will be voted for the third time next Tuesday. If passed, the residential tax rate would increase 2.61% for CCS. When combined with CVU, the increase is slightly less (2.4%).
The nonresidential rate is not affected by the budget. With the adjustment by our CLA it will be 1.3468, an increase by less than 1% (.58%) for school taxes.
The School Board is holding a public hearing about the proposed budget this evening, Thursday, May 13, in the library at CCS.
See other articles for additional information about the budget on this website.
Results of the Tuesday, May 18, revote of the school budget will be posted on the website as soon as available that evening. The polls will be open for voting from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at CCS. It is also possible to vote before then at the Town Clerk’s office, which is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
We will have more information about Scott Orr’s decision not to run in our next issue of The News.
