Food Shelf

Grow an Extra Row for the
Food Shelf

This is a program for anyone with a home garden who can grow an extra row, or might have some vegetables left over - a fun summer activity for kids!

What should you grow?
root vegetables, such asa carrots, turnips and parsnips
broccoli, cabbage
peas, beans, tomatoes
radishes, sweet peppers, summer squash
lettuce and herbs

What’s the minimum donation?
Your local food shelf accepts donations of a little or a lot.

How do you prepare your donation, and where do you take it?
Harvest your veggies and wash them off. Bag them, mark the container “FOOD SHELF” and drop it off by the back door of the Congregational Church Vestry the night before a scheduled distribution day or by 7:30 a.m. the morning of a distribution day, (see dates below). Thanks! Eating local foods is better for people, the environment and our local economy.
In addition to providing healthy food, donations given to the Charlotte Food Shelf support our neighbors in need in several other ways, too. Some of the other programs sponsored by the Food Shelf include:
The Shoe In Program, which provides students at CCS with new sneakers and cleats so they can participate in all school activities.
Help paying utility bills before the power is turned off.
Gas cards so families can have transportation to work, doctor’s appointments, church and senior activities.
Recently, the Food Shelf received an anonymous grant of $3,000. It will be used as seed money to start a Tooth Fairy Program to help provide emergency dental care for local adults who are in need. (Children in Vermont are already supported by a Dental Dinosaur Program.) During the last year, Food Shelf volunteers have been researching ideas on how to help adults receive necessary dental care. Because of this generous grant they will be able to network with dentists in the area and develop the program further.
As always, there are community members and organizations to thank for their support. Thank you to the Carmel Hill Fund for the generous financial donation. Thank you to the following people for donating groceries: Jacinta Monniere, Alexander D’Amico, Live Y’ers Program Director Larry Bullis and the Live Y’ers families, and Elise, Peter and Gregory Seraus for delivering the Live Y’ers groceries to the Food Shelf. Thank you to Jeanie McDonagh for donating jam and jelly jars, and to Lynn Perrin for donating a vacuum cleaner. Thanks to Matthew Burke and Bloomfield Farms for offering to donate vegetables this summer. Thanks to Leigh’s Barber Shop in Shelburne for donating haircuts. Thanks to the Shelburne Supermarket for donating money collected from the coffee station.
Are you feeling a financial crunch? Do you need emergency food? If so, come to the Charlotte Food Shelf and take advantage of the wonderful stock of food. Some of the items available are peanut butter, jelly, juice, cereal, pasta, fruit, vegetables, hotdogs, hamburger, tuna, milk and cheese.
The Food Shelf is located on the lower level of the Charlotte Congregational Church vestry on Church Hill Road. Enter through the back door of the vestry building. For more information call Karen at 425-3252, Sue at 425-3526 or Lynn at 425-3101. Support is confidential.
The Food Shelf will be open from 7:30-9 a.m. on the following Thursday mornings: June 26, July 10, July 24, August 14, August 28, September 11, and September 25. If you are unable to get transportation to the Food Shelf, please give us a call so we can assist you.
