Flinn Prepares for CD Release
Flinn Prepares for CD Release
by Rowan Beck,
October 6, 2011, page 16.....

Aaron Flinn will be releasing his latest album, Miss Ready Blossom and the Sea of Dreams, Friday, October 21, at Studio Three in Burlington. This is sure to be quite a gathering. With only 80 seats in the studio, it’s likely to sell out.

Admission to the show is $25 and includes the new CD. This is his eighth album and it has been two years in the making. His last album was Oroboros released in 2008. Aaron began writing songs for this album in 2009. Flinn, an accomplished musician and graduate of Berklee College of Music has compiled a substantial body of work and has performed on tour with many well-known groups.

He refers to his daughter, Ruby, as his muse since most of the songs were written since she was born. After she would go to bed Aaron would begin to write and strum on his guitar. Since he had to be quieter, he was able to create a new sound for himself. This album has a much more Americana/country sound and flavor than the others; it is also more autobiographical. To aid his new sound, Aaron went out and found some “real country players” to help him.

On this album he has a variety of musicians, even one that plays the saw. Of the 14 musicians who appear on the album, 11 will be at the release, where Aaron plans to play the entire album. The evening is scheduled to run from 7:30-10 p.m., and the album is only forty-five minutes in length, allowing Aaron to play independently for a bit in the beginning. He is excited about the upcoming performance and truly loves to play live.

Aaron feels he has been successful because his music has had an impact on his listeners. He said one of the biggest compliments he received from a fan was, “Hey you’re a real poet.” He’s also been amazed at the effect his music has had on listeners. “From day one people shared how it has impacted them; how it’s helped them through.” He enjoys the impact his music has and admits that it is not always intentional.

Aaron has the uncanny ability to write a song in just a few moments, but also he can piece one together out of the hundreds of ideas or phrases he has put down on paper. For him, making music is like oxygen; he needs to “breath oxygen and make music every day.” He is prolific in his writings and has notebooks filled with ideas and partial songs. Each of his albums typically has 14 to 16 songs. Miss Ready Blossom with 14 songs is shorter than most.

He also attributes his success to his family. His parents, Nancy Flinn and Paul Flinn, and wife, Sarah, have been incredibly supportive. Without them he “couldn’t have stuck to it in a world where art doesn’t matter.” Aaron believes that music speaks to the human soul and wonders what would happen if music were to stop for 24 hours – would people go crazy? Listeners can hear his passion for his music and his family in the songs.

Both of Aaron’s children are mentioned on Miss Ready Blossom. The first song on the album, “She’s My Girl,” is about Ruby and was written when she was one year old and dancing around the living room. Ruby’s favorite song is “My Daughter’s Hand,” the last song created for the album. Both she and her little brother, Atticus, are in it. The title of the album came from a card that was written to Sarah by one of her students when she was pregnant with Atticus.

Aaron continues to live in Charlotte in the house where he grew up. His studio is conveniently located right off the kitchen. He writes with panache and has a passion for art. The songs on Miss Ready Blossom and the Sea of Dreams will move listeners.
