Summer Fun Safety Tips

by Kay Gault

Have a great time this summer, but keep these important safety tips in mind.

BBQ grilling

All grills should be placed well away from any buildings, deck railings and overhanging tree branches.
Keep children and pets away from the grilling area and make sure matches and lighters are kept out of reach.
Do not wear loose or flowing clothes while grilling. Be sure everyone knows to Stop, Drop and Roll if clothing should catch fire.
Never add lighter fluid to an already lit fire, because the flame can flashback up into the container and explode.
Dispose of hot coals properly. Douse them with water and stir them to ensure that the fire is out. Never place coals in plastic, paper or wooden containers.
Never leave the grill unattended.

Campfires

In Charlotte, call Shelburne Dispatch (985-8051) for a burn permit before you start your campfire. Weather conditions will determine if it is safe to burn that day.
Build campfires where they will not spread, away from dry grass and leaves.
Keep campfires small and don’t let them get out of hand.
Have plenty of water to douse the fire when you’re finished. Stir the wet coals with a shovel to be sure the fire is out.
Do not leave the campfire unattended.

Summer storm safety

When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!
If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance of lightning. Get inside a building or hard-topped vehicle right away.
Once inside, keep away from windows and doors and do not use electrical equipment such as computers, corded phones or hair dryers. Avoid washing your hands, bathing, doing laundry or doing dishes.
If you are in or on open water, go to land and seek shelter immediately.
If you are outdoors and cannot get to shelter, stay away from tall objects, such as trees, flagpoles or fences. Try to make yourself as small a target as possible, while minimizing your contact with the ground.
Wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before leaving your shelter.
If someone does get hit by lightning, call 911 immediately. Lightning victims do not carry a charge, so it is safe to touch them. Check their breathing, heartbeat and pulse and if necessary, begin CPR.

If you have questions about summer safety, please call Charlotte Volunteer Fire & Rescue at 425-3111.
