End of Summer Sports
End of Summer Sports
by Edd Merritt
August 25, 2011, page 14.....

Fall sports have begun at CVU, with field hockey, soccer, football and more underway. Coverage will begin in the next issue. Here are some final summer highlights:

Machavern’s Miata goes the distance at Lime Rock.
Lime Rock Park, Connecticut, one of Paul Newman’s favorite venues in his car-racing days, was the site of Dillon Machavern’s entrée into the MAZDASPEED Challenge. In his first run, Dillon fought hard for one of the top three spots, doing battle through contact on the twenty-first lap with another driver. His second race, however, was a banner event for him as he challenged the leader for the entire distance, finally taking second at the line with a difference of only three hundredths of a second. He was off to Charlotte, North Carolina, this past weekend for the North Carolina SCCA Daylight into Darkness race.

Peter Schneider qualifies for World Triathlon Championships.
He’s designed energy efficient houses in Charlotte, and it appears that his ability to maintain and use his own energy effectively stood him in good stead as a triathlete this past weekend. Head of Efficiency Vermont, Peter Schneider of Shelburne finished seventh among men in the 35 to 39 age group in the USA Triathlon Championships. As a member of the top 18 in his age group, he qualifies for the 2012 Age Group Championships in New Zealand next year.

Augusta Burhans hits the top tier in track.
Charlotte’s Augusta Burhans finished sixth in the 50-meter dash for girls 9-10 years old at a national track meet in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The top ten runners came from across the country. Augusta was the lone New England representative in the group. Her time was just over 0.4 seconds behind the winner from Utah and just a second from the record for the event.
