CVU Women Claim First Place in Major Cross-country Meet
CVU Sports, SportShorts and Mini-Metro Basketball Tryouts
By Edd Merritt and ute Otley,
September 23, 2010, pages 18-19.....

At CVU cross-country racing is still a team sport.
By placing four runners among the top 10, the CVU women claimed first place in this fall’s initial major high school cross-country meet, the Essex Invitational. Summer Spillane, Adrienne and Julienne Devita and Aleksey Jordick led the Redhawks.
On the men’s side, Charlotte’s Daniel Hebert and Hinesburg’s Nick Bouton were the Redhawks who finished among top 20. Two days later at Underhill, however, the men followed the lead set by their women counterparts as they defeated Mount Mansfield, Burlington and Essex with seven runners in the top ten.

Field hockey starts the season in goal-scoring mode.
An opening season 6-0 shutout of Burlington seems to have given the Redhawks confidence in their ability to put the ball in the net, even though that game was followed by their lone loss to date, a tight defensive battle against Essex that ended 1-0 in favor of the Hornets. The fact that the Essex goalie stopped six shots and CVU’s Sami Kassel five indicates the closeness of the play. The Redhawks came back in their next two games to defeat Colchester 5-2 and Mount Mansfield 4-1. No single scorer stands out for CVU, which suggests a solid team effort.

“Soccer Central” keeps the ball at the opponents’ end.
With both men’s and women’s teams standing undefeated with four wins and only one opponent goal in those eight contests, it seems fairly safe to say that “Central” continues its prowess at least into the early part of the season. (Unfortunately, the men have yet to face Winooski High, a team laden with international talent from Europe and Africa.) Charlotte’s Ben Comai scored in the opening-day 9-0 victory over Mt Abraham. Tanner and Tino Tomasi, are keeping their family tradition alive demonstrating foot skills and scoring talent. And Kyle Logan helped the cause with a penalty kick in the recent defeat of previously unbeaten Missisquoi, 2-0.
The Lady Hawks gave up the lone goal of the young season in an otherwise overpowering 7-1 defeat of Rice in their opening game. Since then they have ridden their balanced attack to victories over Rutland 7-0, Burr and Burton 5-0 and Milton 2-0. Shelby Hanlon, Kendall Berry, Taylor Goldsborough, Molly Howard, Amanda Kinneston, Sienna Searles, and Kate Raszka have all contributed to numerous tallies and constant pressure on the opponents’ defense and goalkeeper.
Football comes back against North Country.
Hobbled by Charlotte quarterback Konnor Fleming’s ankle injury early in the second half against Division I Essex, CVU was not able to overcome the Hornets’ offense and dropped the game 39-13. Before the injury, Konnor had scored on a 38-yard quarterback sneak. Tucker Kolasch hit two field goals from beyond 35 yards to account for the Redhawk points. The following week against North Country, with Fleming healed, CVU held on for a hard-fought 25-22 win. The lead changed three times in the final quarter before a Fleming-to-Taylor Gingras pass sealed the victory with just over two minutes to play. Fleming hit 16 of 25 passes for 216 yards, giving CVU a 2-1 record.

Sport Shorts

Rob Pierce finds the net for St. Mikes.
Charlotte’s Robin Pierce has been one of the goal-scoring leaders for the St. Michael’s College men’s soccer team this year. He began the season by scoring and setting goals against St. Rose, heading the Knights to a 3-0 win. He followed that performance against Bloomfield in the DoubleTree Classic as his goal was one of three needed to win the game in overtime.
