Women’s cross country team moves on to the national stage.
This has been a stellar year for the Champlain Valley Union women’s cross country runners. A week after taking command of New England, the girls headed to Wappingers Falls, New York, where they faced runners from throughout the northeast. Although it was their first loss of the year, it was by no means disheartening as they finished second in team standings and were invited to participate in the Nike Team National Championships in Portland, Oregon, on Saturday. Running as the Champlain Valley Cross Country Club, CVU sent seven women to the event, including Sophie Hess and Claire Trotter from Charlotte. Taylor Spillane led the Redhawks with a time of 19 minutes 25.5 seconds over the 5-kilometer course. Summer Spillane, Aleksey Jordick, Adrienne and Julienne Devita, Hess and Trotter followed her, all within the top two-thirds among individuals. Close to 200 runners competed. Coach Scott Bliss said that this is the first time a Vermont team has made it to the nationals. The week before the northeastern tournament, the Burlington Free Press had named Summer Spillane Athlete of the Week.
CVU field hockey stars make all-state rosters.
Aubrey Deavitt, a senior defender from Shelburne, was named to the Burlington Free Press first all-state team. She and her classmate, midfielder Louise Gibbs, were named to the Twin-State senior team and to the Metro Division first-team all-stars. Gibbs was an honorable mention on the Free Press all-state roster. The Metro Division all stars also included Redhawks Lida Lutton on defense and Molly Burke at forward on its second team, with forward Mallory Hillman gaining honorable mention.
Redhawks and Green Knights represent the north in all-star football.
Rice’s Patrick Colmenero from Charlotte helped the north squad’s cause with a pair of catches from his teammate, quarterback Christian McCormick, one of which was a touchdown toss. The up-staters defeated the southern team 74-48 at Castleton State’s stadium. CVU was represented by Charlotte’s Konnor Fleming, who was sidelined by a prior knee injury, and by backs J.P. Benoit and Eric Palmer plus linemen Cameron Fitzgerald and Dale Conger.
CVU football will move up to
Division I.
Next fall Vermont Division I football will see four new teams in its ranks as CVU joins Colchester, Mt. Mansfield and Middlebury in moving from Division II into the top ranks. With the newcomers expanding the league to 14 teams, eight of them will qualify for playoff berths in 2011. It will mean that quarterfinal games will appear for the first time in Vermont football. It will also pit the Redhawks against schools that they play in most other sports, schools such as Essex, South Burlington, Spaulding, Rutland, Burlington and St. Johnsbury Academy.
