Invitational meets mark the heart of track season.
The 38th Burlington Invitational, the Bob White and South Burlington relays, as well as a home meet against BFA, Middlebury and St. Johnsbury have kept Redhawk runners on the move. They started the month of May by placing 5th among 22 high schools at the annual Burlington meet. The women’s 4X100 meter relay team captured first place, with Haleigh Smith taking second in the triple jump and Maya Grevatt third in the pole vault. On the men’s side, the 4X800 meter runners finished less than 4 seconds behind winners South Burlington and the 4X100 took third place. Both men and women won their home meet against Burlington, BFA-St. Albans and Middlebury. Again, the relay runners displayed some real team skills. Smooth baton passes helped them capture both 4X100 and 4X800 races for men and women. On the women’s side, Kaitlin O’Connell and Maya Grevatt placed one and two in the 300-meter hurdles, while among the men, Charlotte’s Chris Sulva won the 400-meter run. Sulva also helped his team come in a close second at St. Albans as a member of the winning 4X400 relay squad.
Unbeaten streak still alive for men’s lacrosse.
Whether their opponents are from the north, south or central part of the state, it doesn’t seem to matter to the Redhawk men’s lacrosse team. They have taken on all comers and remained victorious. Wedged in between wins over Burlington and Middlebury by rather substantial margins, CVU waited until the fourth quarter for a goal from Derek Goodwin to clinch a 4-3 victory over South Burlington. Another one-point win at Spaulding, in a game that saw both Lawrence Dee and Nick Spencer score, brought the Redhawks home for game number 12 against BFA. This contest was quite different from an earlier one in which CVU had to come from behind in dramatic fashion. This time, playing on their home field, the Redhawks built a 6-2 lead at the half. Jake Marston helped the team’s cause with a goal, while coach Trevithick praised his defense of Cully Milikin and Ben Teasdale for their solid long sticks. CVU has outscored opponents this year 134-70.
Beldock and Kiley provide goals for struggling women’s lacrosse.
It has been a learning year so far for the CVU women’s lacrosse team. Even Sydney Beldock’s four goals and Michaela Kiley’s hat trick against Burlington couldn’t keep the game from going into overtime where the Seahorses pulled out a 16-15 win. The two Charlotte women scored again against South Burlington, but to no avail, as the Rebels won 16-7. Last week against Essex, Kiley provided one of CVU’s 7 goals. Unfortunately it was four less than what they needed for victory.
McCarthy is undefeated in her last three tennis matches.
Colleen McCarthy is playing strong tennis recently, winning her singles matches against opponents from South Burlington, BFA-St. Albans and Burlington. The Redhawks, as a whole, have followed suit with team victories. Kylie deGroot fell just short in her number one singles matches against Rebel and Seahorse challengers, losing 6-4, 6-0 at South Burlington and 6-4, 6-3 at Leddy Park. However, the team’s victory over BHS put CVU alone at the top of the division with a 9 - 0 record through mid-May.
Redhawk baseball remains just above the .500 mark this season.
Lawrence Halvorson has been hitting and Andrew Leckerling and Ryan Machavern pitching to help CVU’s baseball team stay one win above even for the season. In the last outing, a 13-4 away-victory at Middlebury, Leckerling was the winning pitcher, scattering five hits while striking out eight. Halvorson collected two hits in each of three games earlier in the month.
The links are alive with the sound of irons.
CVU golfers traveled to Newport and Burlington country clubs recently and returned home with one first place and one second. Williston’s Jack Tomashot was the low man for the Redhawks in each tournament. CVU defeated second-place South Burlington by eleven strokes in the first go-round and fell to the home-course golfers from North Country in Newport. Tomashot and Chris Nigh both broke 80.
