Red and white jerseys dominate men’s lacrosse.
Facing Essex at Burlington High School’s Buck Hard Field because of poor field conditions on the opponent’s own pitch evoked the image of a rematch of last year’s state championship. The Redhawks were ready this time and, behind solid goal tending by Eric Palmer, topped the rivals 10-8. A strong midfield centered by Charlotte’s Jake Marston and a potent attack directed from behind the Hornet net by Lawrence Dee feeding fellow Charlotter, Nat Wells, for three goals provided the needed offense. CVU followed up with a 12-1 win over BFA-St. Albans and a 13-5 away victory over Mt. Mansfield. Again, the offensive trio of Dee, Wells and Marston with the help of fellow Charlotter Nick Spencer plus consistent goaltending by Palmer proved to be deciding factors.

Women Laxsters split a pair.
It took Kate Raszca’s goal with just over three and a-half minutes to play in order to ensure a single point win over Essex, 13-12. Fellow Charlotte product Michaela Kiley accounted for two of the Redhawk tallies, and Mikaela Gobeille in goal kept out 17 Hornet shots. Traveling to Bennington, the Redhawk women found the going tougher as Mount Anthony revenged an earlier defeat by capping CVU’s offense for a 13-3 win. Raszka and Kiley again netted goals for the Redhawks whose record stands at 2 and 2 heading into a May 4 game against Burlington.

Both track teams run past opponents with ease.
Hosting Lake Region and Rice Memorial in a three-way meet in Hinesburg, CVU’s men and women captured team wins. The men topped second-place Lake Region by 70 points with Daniel Hebert winning both the 1,500 and 3,000-meter runs. Chris Sulva clocked in second in the 400, while Adam Allegretta cleared the high-jump bar to finish second. The CVU relay teams took first places in all three events.
The Redhawk women also topped their second place opponent, Rice, by a substantial 90 points. Charlotte freshman Haliana Burhans won the 400-meter run with another Charlotter Maya Grevatt placing third. Kaitlin O’Connell hurdled to victory at 300 meters and tied for second in the high jump. Claire Trotter placed second in both 1,500 and 3,000 meter runs. Grevatt picked up a pole and vaulted into third place behind two CVU teammates.

In tennis the south rises again. . .
South Burlington, that is, by identical 4-3 margins for both men and women. On the men’s singles’ side, Will Hall extended his opponent in the second set before losing it and his match 7-6. Jared Keyes also dropped a close match 6-1, 6-3. Tristan Arthaud and his doubles partner Asa Cloutier had an easier time, winning by forfeit. Arthaud and David Keyes both won singles matches in a 7-0 sweep of BFA-St. Albans.
Charlotte doubles partners, Kristen Donaldson and Evie Mitchel, also fell to their South Burlington opponents 6-2, 6-3. Singles winners for the Redhawks were Andrea Joseph, Emily Polhemus and Claire Doner. The women also swept BFA-St. Albans by a 7-0 count.

Machavern makes his presence know on the diamond.
Charlotte senior Ryan Machavern has provided some of a limited number of bright lights for CVU’s baseball team this spring. Playing a strong defensive first base and hitting well in the pinch, he has helped the Redhawks stay alive in several games. His two hits, one of them producing an RBI, in an 8-5 loss to Rice tied him with teammate Jeff Badger for team leadership in the game, and he handled a number of balls at first base in a close loss to Mount Abraham last Saturday. The Redhawks found their second victory of the young season against South Burlington as Tim Jones’ RBI in the 7th inning kbroke a 1-1 tie.

Softball hails its first win of the season.
Leah Leister led the Redhawks with three RBI’s on a home run and a double as CVU’s softball team pounded Rice 18-3. Unfortunately for the Redhawks, the victory came on the heels of a 14-2 shellacking at the hands of Mississquoi and was followed by a 6-3 loss to Mount Abraham. Despite the Burling Free Press’ headline to the contrary, South Burlington defeated CVU on Tuesday, 8-5.

Carlie Krolick often may be seen running her dogs on Ferry Road. However, two weeks ago she left her hounds behind and joined another Charlotter, Kelly Brush, in the annual 26.2 mile Boston Marathon. Kelly, who was injured while skiing for Middlebury College, won the women’s handcycle division in a time of 1 hour, 55 minutes and 1 second. She was the sixth cyclist to finish. Krolick was 29th in her division with a time of 3 hours, 45 minutes and 9 seconds. Another local product, Kasie Enman who graduated from Middlebury College and now coaches track and field at CVU along with her husband Eli, was the 24th woman and the first Vermonter to cross the finish as a runner.
