Both tennis teams start season on a winning note.
Despite the shortage of what tennis addicts would call true weather for the sport, CVU’s men and women have managed to fit four matches into early April. The men, led by a quintet from Charlotte, have split a pair with Essex while rolling over Rice and Mount Mansfield Union. Senior Will Hall played number one singles against Rice, carrying his opponent to three sets before dropping the last one 6-4. He came back to win against Mount Mansfield. Jared Keyes and Tristan Arthaud also saw singles’ action, and Arthaud joined partner Josh Huber in a doubles win against MMU. David Keyes and Tyler Murphy, as well as Arthaud again, also claimed pair wins.
On the women’s ledger, the undefeated team has a strong Charlotte presence, particularly in doubles. Kristen Donaldson and Evie Mitchell began the season by defeating Essex 6-0, 6-1. They continued against Rice, even though they were stretched to three sets, taking the first and last of them 6-3, 6-3. Taylor Kingston and her partner, Becca Daniels, won their doubles match as the team blanked Mount Mansfield in a recent match 7-0. Kingston and Daniel’s match was the closest of the day, as they prevailed 6-3, 7-5.
Many lacrosse goals come all the way from Charlotte.
The Redhawk women’s lacrosse team is one and one on the season. That record could easily be 2 and 0 or 0 and 2, as they outscored Mount Anthony, a team that blanked them last year, in a game filled with goals. Michaela Kiley’s five netters led CVU to a 15-13 win. Her teammate from Charlotte, Kate Raszka, added a goal and freshman Carrie Braun set up plays in the offensive zone and had several scoring chances of her own. The second game of the year saw the Redhawks edged by Rutland 8-7. Again Kiley and Raszka were the leading scorers for CVU with a pair of goals apiece.
The CVU men appear to be the team on the run in the state, standing 3-0 on the season. Midfielder Jake Marston demonstrates wizardry at winning face-offs, while Lawrence Dee runs the offense in the attack zone, aided by Nat Wells and Nick Spencer. Thus far, CVU has outscored its opponents 44-19. Recent wins against perennial power Woodstock (17-8) and Spaulding (15-6), after taking the season home opener against Rice 12-5, have them looking forward to a trip to Essex on Thursday.
Baseball 1, softball 0
Both ball teams faced opposing teams and Vermont weather during the past week. The baseball men faired better than the women, as they scored early and held the lead behind Andrew Nick’s relief pitching, defeating Mount Mansfield 6-4. MMU women, on the other hand, overpowered the Redhawk softballers 15-0 as CVU managed few hits against strong, complete-game pitching, which included five strikeouts.

Wrestling Hurricanes compete in state championships.
Chittenden South’s young wrestlers headed to Essex on April 9 and 10 to challenge grapplers from around the state of Vermont. Charlotters on the Hurricanes included 1st grader Damien Broe and 4th grader Andrew Tieso who brought back state trophies in their weight classes. Second-grader Scott Mathieu finished third, and Maverick Lowrey took home seventh place. The Hurricane season is over until next January.
Beldock pitches in on Berkshire School’s jump to Division I lacrosse.
Writer Matt Rowley in the April 5 issue of Inside Lacrosse, singled out Charlotte’s Geordie Beldock, a senior attack for western Massachusetts’s Berkshire School, for mention. He called Geordie a “gun slinging hard riding attackman who never takes a moment off.” Beldock is one of several Vermonters at Berkshire who will play important roles in the prep school’s leap into higher division competition.
