Ute Otley named to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
Basketball is to Indiana what hockey is to Quebec. CVU social studies teacher, local AAU girls basketball coach and former Charlotte recreation coordinator Ute Otley received distinction by being named to the 2011 Women’s Silver Anniversary Basketball team in her home state of Indiana. Ute grew up in Valpariso, Indiana, and attended Dartmouth College before coming to Vermont. She and her 17 teammates on the all-star team will be honored at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame’s Annual Women’s Banquet in Indianapolis Saturday, April 30.
CVU’s Rose named a college All-American.
Williston’s Micah Rose, a Champlain Valley Union graduate and junior at Pennsylvania’s Swarthmore College, was named to the NCAA Division III All-American Soccer Team.
CVU’s Goodwin named Free Press Athlete of the Week.
Derek Goodwin, a Redhawk hockey player from Williston, was named the Burlington Free Press’ male athlete of the week December 25. His four goals in two games helped CVU capture the annual Charlie Burchard Tournament at Leddy Arena with a 4-1 victory over Colchester followed by a 5-4 overtime defeat of Rice.

Nordic skiers follow in cross-country runners’ tracks.
Both men’s and women’s cross-country running teams applied the principle of teamwork to gain victories. The women went so far as to defeat all of New England and participate in a national high school tournament on the west coast. This winter, many familiar names from that running team appear in the Nordic skiing results. Charlotte’s Sienna Searles has been among the top individual finishers regularly. She was second in a 5K skating race at the Ethan Allen Firing Range course recently. Cally Braun placed 18 and Ellie Stone 28 out of a total of 50 racers.
On the men’s side, Jake Marston’s fifth place, Ian Meier’s ninth and Daniel Hebert’s tenth helped the Redhawks capture the team win by 25 points over second-place U32. CVU had the top three racers in Hans Frederick Fahle, Kilian Muller and Sam Epstein.
Indoor trackers keep warm in winter.
UVM’s indoor track course keeps high school runners, jumpers and throwers off the streets during the snowy season. In the latest meet, CVU’s Sam Chevalier and Dale Conger won, respectively, the pole vault and shot put competition. Keith Kelly took second in the 55 yard hurdles, and Thomas Keller captured third place in the long jump to give the Redhawks a fourth place overall. Twenty-two schools sent teams.
The women placed up a notch at third with Adrienne DeVita winning the 3,200 meter race, and the 4X200 relay team, featuring Charlotte’s Kaliana Burhans, also topping the field. The 4X800 relay team placed second.
Dobrowski’s goal scoring leads men’s hockey to victories.
Shelburne senior Robbie Dobrowski’s name shows up with regularity on the scoring sheets for the CVU men’s hockey games this season. The undefeated Redhawks recently claimed a 6-0 shutout of Harwood in which Dobrowski netted two goals and provided three assists. With the win, CVU improved to 7-0 for the season. Several days earlier Robbie had scored with 33 seconds remaining to lift CVU over Spaulding 3-2. The Redhawks avenged an earlier close call in the Charlie Burchard tournament with a year-ending 8-1 defeat of Rice. Kyle Logan joined Dobrowski with two goals and two assists, and Derek Goodwin added a third pair of goals.
Redhawk hockey women stand at 5-2.
Going back to three days before Christmas when the Redhawk women complemented their male colleagues with an 8-1 defeat of Rice, they have gone two and one. Charlotte’s Izette Kelly, centering the second line, scored in the Rice game to supplement Sophia Steinhoff’s hat trick. Molly Howard provided a lone goal in a 1-0 win over Hartford. Goalie Emily Sackett worked a 16-save shutout. The scoring was passed to Amanda Armell against Burr and Burton as she put in four of the Redhawk’s seven goals. Sackett again closed the door on the opponents with 15 saves and a shutout. CVU opened 2011 with a 6-1 loss to a strong Spaulding team. Steinhoff scored the Redhawk goal.
Wrestlers grapple with the new year.
Coach Rahn Fleming’s wrestlers are off to a winning start to 2011 aided by recent victories over Fair Haven and Otter Valley. Wrestling at 130 pounds, Charlotte’s Patrick Shea ended the old year with a pin against Randolph in a meet the Redhawks won 66-6. Ryan Fleming has also been weighing in at the 189 pound class, winning an earlier dual meet against Enosburg by pinning his opponent. Coach Fleming is pleased with the team’s progress. “The guys are wrestling hard, pushing one another and getting better by the day. We’re all in it together and headed in the right direction.”
Women hoopsters enter the new year with victory smiles.
Senior captain Amanda Kinneston has been the steady scoring source for the Redhawks this season. Starting the New Year with three wins, she scored 15 points against South Burlington, 12 of the team’s 47 against Spaulding, and 9 in the defeat of North Country. Standing at six wins against only three losses, CVU hopes to continue its upward curve toward the playoffs.
Redhawk men hoopsters remain even.
CVU men’s basketball team felt the brunt of BFA-St. Albans’ scoring whiz, Nick Swim, as he dumped in his 1,000th point at CVU’s expense. However, it required a strong fourth quarter by the Bobcats to seal the victory 51-42. CVU’s Jake Donnelly and Robert Russ have been scoring leaders in their own rights for CVU. Donnelly hit for 27 against Vergennes and Russ for 24 against Mississquoi just before Christmas. Russ missed a game due to an injured ankle, and his return should improve the team’s scoring power.
