CVU Sports: All-State Teams Glow Redhawk
by Edd Merritt, December 1, 2011, page 20.....Field Hockey and Men’s and Women’s Soccer All-State teams were speckled with CVU players this fall. Both soccer squads advanced to the state championships with the women capturing the title and the men falling short by a single goal.
The Burlington Free Press’ First Team for women contained two Charlotte names, Kate Raszka, a senior defense person, and Sienna Searles, also a defender. The third Redhawk on the premier squad was high-scoring forward Sophia Steinhoff, also voted the Free Press’ Miss Hockey for 2010-11. The Vermont Soccer Coaches Association added Taylor Goldsborough to the CVU list for their Division I All-Stars, while the Free Press had Sara Lewis, a senior defender on its second team roster. Kate, Sienna, Taylor, Sara, Sophia and Shelby Hanlon were named to the coaches’ Metro Division first team, while Charlotte sophomore Haliana Burhans and Hinesburg’s Abby Eddy received honorable mention.
On the male side of the ledger Redhawks Sam Bateman and Shane Haley, one a midfielder, the other a forward, were placed on the Free Press First All-State team. Forward Ben Comais and defender Parker Cornbrooks made the second team, and midfielder Todd Forrester earned honorable mention. The coaches also picked Bateman and Haley for their Division I All-Stars and added Cornbrooks to their Metro Division stars. The second team contained another Charlotte name, Sam Raszka, plus Comai. Charlotte’s Ezra Mount-Finette, along with Forrester, received honorable mention.
Although the Redhawk field hockey team did not fare as well as its sisters-in-soccer, several individual players and Coach Kate McDonald were recognized for their efforts. Kate was selected to help coach the Vermont Twin-State team, which also had CVU’s Kathryn Maitland at midfield. Senior Lida Lutton, a defender, was picked by the Free Press for its First Team All-Stars. She also made the first team in the coaches’ selections for Metro-Division stars. Her teammate, Jenna Cloutier, was named to the second team as a midfielder, and Maitland received honorable mention.
