Men’s lacrosse relies heavily on Charlotte-bred scoring power.
Charlotte trio of Lawrence Dee, Nick Spencer and Nat Wells supply goals making the Redhawks the team to beat this spring. Starting with a 12-8 home win against Spaulding in mid-April, a game that saw Dee score two goals and assist on two (Wells also hit the net twice and Spencer once), CVU then topped Essex 8-7 on a goal by Nat with just over a minute to play. Closing out April with close wins over BFA-St. Albans, 9-8, and Mount Mansfield, 10-8, the Redhawks kept their unbeaten record alive at 7 wins, 0 losses.
Women’s lacrosse struggles.
Essex and Mount Anthony are the recent claimants of success against CVU women’s lacrosse. Amanda Kinneston’s six goals were not enough to overcome Mount Anthony’s prolific 16-goal output, as the Patriots won by 7. Charlotte’s Lucy Halvorson scored one of CVU’s goals. Later in the week Essex visited Hinesburg and left winning 14-3, dropping CVU’s record to 1-3.
Women’s tennis serves up victories.
Following shutouts against South Burlington and Mount Mansfield, by identical 7-0 scores, the Redhawk women’s tennis team found Rice more challenging. Number one singles player Kylie deGroot fell to Holly Thayer, in an extremely close match, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5. The Redhawks however, maintained their unblemished record through April entering May at the top of their division.
Men find the net in the way.
CVU’s men’s tennis team found victories hard to come by during April. Even Will Hall, a previously consistent winner, dropped his match to Rice’s Rob Eyler as the Redhawks fell 6-1. Tristan Arthaud played doubles in two close contests that saw the team lose 4-3 to South Burlington and 5-2 to Essex. Hall rebounded to lead CVU to a 7-0 shutout of BFA-St. Albans.
The runs seem to come in clusters for softballers.
With the exception of two games in their last five, Redhawk softball has demonstrated a propensity for scoring. They began their slugging flurries in mid-April when they beat South Burlington 21-14. They followed up with a 10-2 drubbing of Rice before dropping an extra-inning contest to Mount Abraham 20-19. Heather McGlaughlin banged out five of CVU’s 24 hits against the Rebels and went 3-for-4 against Rice to lead the Redhawks.
Charlotters contribute to baseball’s April wins.
Things have not gone easily for the CVU baseball team this spring. However, in its two latest wins, Charlotte players Ryan Machavern and Drew Leckerling have contributed significantly. Machavern doubles on first base and on the mound. He relieved Drew Nick against South Burlington as the Redhawks managed their first win of the season via Nick’s double in the bottom of the eighth inning. Leckerling got the starting pitcher’s assignment against Mississquois and held them at bay for most of the game before Alex Hopkins relieved him to claim the victory 7-5.
Women runners show their own derby skills.
In two track meets at Colchester and Essex, CVU women have lived up to their reputation as one of the better teams in the north. They topped five other schools on the Lakers’ track with strong showings in the relays and among several individuals, including Charlotte’s Maya Grevatt who placed second in the pole vault. She topped all competitors at Essex, winning the event at 8 feet. However, her team dropped to fourth place in the meet. Only 2 points kept CVU from beating South Burlington in early May.
Men’s track team relies on team efforts.
Whether running as a relay or scoring individually, the CVU men have achieved. Winning both the 4X400 and 4X800 relay runs and placing second in the 4X100, the Redhawks captured second place overall at Colchester. Charlotte’s Chris Sulva took second in the 400 meter run. At Essex they had nine individuals at or near the top of each event as well as relay teams that won the 4X400 and placed third in the 4X100 races. South Burlington beat them narrowly with Nick Kelley and Jacob Hinsdale finishing near the top of their events.
