Champlain Valley Union tennis is a family affair.
With mother Amy deGroot taking over the reins of the CVU women’s tennis team, led by the squad’s number one singles player, her daughter Kylie, and Kylie’s twin brother Tabor heading the men’s team, deGroot will be a familiar name in tennis press this spring. The Redhawk women began their season with a 6-1 drubbing of Rice Memorial. Kylie defeated another local player, Holly Thayer, 6-1, 6-0. Molly Ziegler and her partner Christina Parker helped the cause with a doubles’ victory. The women then blanked Essex 7-0 to make their presence known early in the season.
The CVU men have not started as strongly, dropping their first match to Rice 4-3 before beating Mount Mansfield 6-1. They then won only one singles’ match from Essex as they fell 6-1. Will Hall has been the most consistent Redhawk winner, gaining victories in all three matches.
LAX is anything but.
CVU men’s lacrosse built a 3-0 record starting off the season with wins over Woodstock, Rice Memorial and South Burlington. Charlotte is well represented among scorers with Jake Marston, Nat Wells, Lawrence Dee, Nick Spencer and Pete Hiser all contributing goals. Traditional rival South Burlington gave the Redhawks their closest contest, 11-6. Dee had a goal and five assists, while Marston hit the net twice.
Sydney Beldock led the women to a 12-10 overtime victory over Rutland for the team’s first win. She tallied four goals including the one that put CVU ahead in overtime. As a result of her efforts, Sydney was named one of “Friday’s Five” by Alex Abrami of the Burlington Free Press. Lucy Halvorson also fired in a Redhawk goal, her second of the season.
